Cultural shock

Culture shock within the R D divisions of the megamerged pharma companies and a brain drain of talented young researchers. 

Take culture shock seriously. Culture shock—the disorientation that occurs when moving from one area to another—requires adjustment. There is also a necessary adjustment when you move from your private home to a different living environment. There will be new neighbors, new social situations, and new rules to follow. This culture shock is possible in your own community when you move from your home into a retirement center.

The diverse contributions to what is now simply referred to as culture shock highlight the complexities of the concept. For the traveller, particularly the traveller moving across time zones into altered daylight and weather conditions, there are assaults on the body s immune system and functioning. A rich travel medicine literature has now developed and is replete with dramatic example of the difficulties faced by some tourists. 

The difficulty in dealing with people whose value system and communication style may be markedly different is a major contributor to culture shock. The difficulties may arise in conceptions of honesty and bribery or, more simply, different meanings for friendship and social performance. This component of culture shock, the core of the phenomenon, will be discussed in more detail using two conceptual schemes. 

Despite the contributions of daily hassles, orientation issues and physical challenges to the total culture shock phenomenon, the core of attention has been on the cultural values and communication component. 

The discussion and presentation of culture shock and the components that constitute its full complexity imply a ready acceptance of the term. If a person has undergone a very abrupt and acute break with reality, it can be very helpful to examine the precipitating trauma. The trauma may be culture shock for a student visiting from another country. It may be the death of a loved one. It may be an ongoing abusive relationship that restimulated the effects of even worse abuse in childhood. Life stories, and the traumatic events that abound in them, are infinitely varied. 

Cornelia D. Gillyard Spelman students who go away to graduate schools or other majority institutions with a different culture have experienced a similar culture shock. If you would allow me, I would like to relate the experiences our students initially had with the dual-degree program.

Friary s book is a much-needed treatise for those chemists, or for that matter any scientist, about to enter or contemplating entry into the pharmaceutical industry. Experience has shown that academe does not prepare us for the culture shock of moving into the multifarious environment of the pharmaceutical industry.

Any person working within the pharmaceutical industry or allied/support industries in a scientific capacity will be well aware that a good deal of their everyday work requires conformance to quality standards dictated by various regulatory bodies. For a scientist coming directly from university into the industry, there may weU be some culture shock and bewilderment caused by the plethora of standards and procedures that require to be followed as part of their job. Additionally, it may be disturbing to discover that non-compliance with these quality standards and regulatory requirements could result in severe penalties for their employer and loss of their own job. 

Be aware of culture shock It follows this pattern initial euphoria and excitement and interest in the area, then confusion and irritability because you don t understand the cultural norms and hidden signals, and finally acceptance (of what s good and bad in the country) and adaptation.
