Complex Coacervation. This process occurs ia aqueous media and is used primarily to encapsulate water-iminiscible Hquids or water-iasoluble soHds (7). In the complex coacervation of gelatin with gum arabic (Eig. 2), a water-iasoluble core material is dispersed to a desired drop size ia a warm gelatin solution. After gum arabic and water are added to this emulsion, pH of the aqueous phase is typically adjusted to pH 4.0—4.5. This causes a Hquid complex coacervate of gelatin, gum arabic, and water to form. When the coacervate adsorbs on the surface of the core material, a Hquid complex coacervate film surrounds the dispersed core material thereby forming embryo microcapsules. The system is cooled, often below 10°C, ia order to gel the Hquid coacervate sheU. Glutaraldehyde is added and allowed to chemically cross-link the capsule sheU. After treatment with glutaraldehyde, the capsules are either coated onto a substrate or dried to a free-flow powder. [Pg.318]

A unique feature of in situ encapsulation technology is that polymerization occurs ia the aqueous phase thereby produciag a condensation product that deposits on the surface of the dispersed core material where polymerization continues. This ultimately produces a water-iasoluble, highly cross-linked polymer capsule shell. The polymerization chemistry occurs entirely on the aqueous phase side of the iaterface, so reactive agents do not have to be dissolved ia the core material. Because the heat distortion temperature of cured epoxy resins (qv) increases with the functionality of the curing agents, pyromellitic dianhydride is used to cross-link epoxy resins for elevated temperature service. The dianhydride may be added as a dispersion of micropulverized powder in liquid epoxy resin or as a glycol adduct (158). Such epoxies may be used as an insulating layer in printed circuit boards to improve heat resistance (159). For aqueous inks, the resins are water- or alkali-soluble or dispersible and the solvent is mosdy water containing sufficient alcohol (as much as 25%) to help solubilize the resin. To keep the alkah-soluble resin in solution, pH must be maintained at the correct level. Advances include the development of uv inks. These are high viscosity inks that require no drying but are photocurable by uv radiation. In these formulations, the solvent is replaced by monomers and photoinitiators that can be cross-linked by exposure to uv radiation. The advantage of this system is the complete elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOC) as components of the system and better halftone print quaUty. Sihcone products dominate the pressure-sensitive adhesive release paper market, but other materials such as Quilon (E.I. du Pont de Nemours Co., Inc.), a Werner-type chromium complex, stearato chromic chloride [12768-56-8] are also used. Various base papers are used, including polyethylene-coated kraft as well as polymer substrates such as polyethylene or polyester film. Sihcone coatings that cross-link to form a film and also bond to the cellulose are used in various forms, such as solvent and solventless dispersions and emulsions. Technical requirements for the coated papers include good release, no contamination of the adhesive being protected, no blocking in roUs, good solvent holdout with respect to adhesives appHed from solvent, and good thermal and dimensional stabiUty (see Silicon COMPOUNDS, silicones). [Pg.102]

The compression set of sihcone mbber is similar to organic types of mbber at low (0—50°C) temperatures, ranging from 5 to 15% (380). Above 50°C, sihcone mbber is superior, but compression set increases with time and temperature. Sihcone mbber is more tear-sensitive than butyl mbber, and the degree of sensitivity is a function of filler size and dispersion, cross-link density, and curing conditions. The electrical properties of sihcone mbber are generally superior to organic mbbers and are retained over a temperature range from —50 to 250°C (51). Water-dispersible resins contain carboxyhc groups which are neutralized using base or amine compounds. This solubilizes the resin in solution and also promotes pigment wetting. Film formation occurs by the evaporation of volatiles foUowed by cross-linking through ambient cure oxidative reactions or elevated temperature reactions. Hydroxyethylcellulose is included in the Hst of materials that are in compHance with requirements of the U.S. EDA for use in adhesives and in resinous and polymeric coatings employed on the food-contact surfaces of metal, paper, or paperboard articles, and other substrates intended for use in food packaging as specified in CER 21. HEC made dispersible by cross-linking with glyoxal is cleared only as an adhesive and as a component of paper and paperboard in contact with food.
