Cromolyn adverse effects

Patients receiving these agents may notice improvement in 1 to 2 weeks, but maximal benefit may not be seen for 4 to 6 weeks. Cromolyn and nedocromil appear to be similar in efficacy to the leukotriene antagonists and theophylline for persistent asthma.18 Both agents are well tolerated with adverse effects limited to cough and wheezing. Bad taste and headache have also been reported with nedocromil. One dose of cromolyn or nedocromil prior to exercise or allergen exposure will provide effective prophylaxis for 1 to 2 hours. Cromolyn and nedocromil are not as effective as albuterol for prophylaxis of exercise-induced asthma. 

Cromolyn is devoid of significant adverse effects and drug interactions. A yellow haze is not an expected side effect or adverse effect of cromolyn. 

In situations of limited, anticipated allergen exposure (e.g., animal dander), intranasal cromolyn may provide symptom relief when used shortly before exposure. Intranasal cromolyn sodium is notably safe. Adverse effects are localized to the nasal mucosa and minor. They include sneezing, nasal stinging, burning, irritation, and nose bleeds (< 1%). Because of its safety profile, intranasal cromolyn sodium is frequently used in children and pregnant women (54). 

Some irritation of the nasal and upper respiratory passages may occur following inhalation, but these drugs are remarkably free of serious adverse reactions. Hence, cromolyn and nedocromil are often used preferentially to treat mild persistent asthma, especially in children or in individuals who are unable to tolerate the side effects of other antiasthma drugs.102,113... 

Because of its low toxicity, cromolyn is generally well tolerated. Adverse side effects, such as broncho-spasm, cough, wheezing, laryngeal edema, joint swelling, joint pain, angioedema, headache, rash, and nausea, are rare (less than 1 in 10 000 patients). Documented instances of anaphylaxis are also been rare. 

Cromolyn sodium is effective in certain types of patients in preventing asthmatic attacks, even when used over long periods of time (SED,VIII, 422). It may replace steroid treatment in a substantial number of patients (6 ). Cromolyn sodium remains a remarkably effective and safe drug. Nasal congestion is a rare side effect which appeared to have been described in only 3 patients up to September 1975 (7 ). Since then, bron-chospasm has been described as an adverse reaction ...
