Critical design review

Critical Design Review - to establish that the detail design for each sub-element of the product/service complies with its development specification and that product specifications have been produced before manufacture of the prototypes... 

At this phase no technical hurdles are anticipated. Future actions include conducting a safety design review (HazOps analysis), establishing an activity-based target date for a critical design review, and generating a system level functional specification document which will help define the research boundaries for this project.

A stated requirement of the HEAT/ACT project SPP was that the PSC should be prepared to support Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews (PDR and CDR). Producing the PSC would also ensure that the Interim Safety Case could be prepared in time to support first flight. 

It should be completed concurrently with design process. Various check points pertinent to DEMEA/DFMECA are depicted in Fig. IV/2.0.4-1B. All such checks are carried out during the preliminary design review meeting, critical design review meeting, etc.

The qualification model was to be identical to the flight unit (i.e., uses flight quality hardware) except that it would use an electrically heated core mockup. The reactor module was to be based on the NRPCT final design, while the spacecraft module was to be based on the NGST critical design review (final design). The QM test would drive components to qualification level environmental testing, which would exceed mission requirements.
