Steven Pinker, The Language Instinct How the Mind Creates Language (New York HarperCollins, 2000). [Pg.178]

In 1986, David Weininger created the SMILES Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System) notation at the US Environmental Research Laboratory, USEPA, Duluth, MN, for chemical data processing. The chemical structure information is highly compressed and simplified in this notation. The flexible, easy to learn language describes chemical structures as a line notation [20, 21]. The SMILES language has found widespread distribution as a universal chemical nomenclature... [Pg.26]

Each observer Oi (1) knows that m-1 other observers exist, but does not know anything about their internal construction (or predicate skeletons ) (2) must balance two complementary desires - (i) the desire to create as unambiguous a language as possible to communicate as easily as possible with all other observers (which requires his world-viev. to be as similar to the world-views of other observers as possible) (ii) the desire to be as distinct - and therefore, as locally well-defined... [Pg.707]

When individuals from several disciplines try to address a common problem, how do they communicate with each other and what process do they select for their paradigm If each individual believes that their paradigm is the only one to use and that every one must use that nomenclature and process, major confrontations can arise. If there is a dominate personality that forces everyone on the team to learn the leaders paradigm, language, and process, then a learning period of several years may be required before the team can be effective. An alternative is to create a compromise language acceptable to the team, but this can create a communication barrier between the team and the traditional disciplines. [Pg.6]

This method of data collection uses Portable Document Format (PDF) Forms. This approach is flexible and inexpensive. A number of commercial software packages such as Adobe Acrobat, LaText, and Microsoft Word and free software such as Python and R are used to create the PDF forms. Paper copies of the PDF forms may be used as an intermediate data collection. Electronic versions are completed at each site with Adobe Reader software. Completed forms are submitted on a CD or faxed as Extended Markup Language (XML)... [Pg.610]

RTF stands for Rich Text Format, which is Microsoft s open markup language for defining the content of documents. If you have an RTF file, simply clicking on it within a Microsoft Windows environment causes Microsoft Word or WordPad to open the file. There are several ways to create RTF files, and thus Microsoft Word files, with SAS. [Pg.192]

PDF stands for Portable Document Format, which is an open document description language created by Adobe Systems Inc. PDF files have several advantages over RTF and ASCII text files ... [Pg.194]
