Cracking prevention techniques

Due to the complexity of the SCC phenomenon, preventive techniques have been expressed in general rather than specific terms. It should be recognized that exceptions to these general guidelines may exist and that cracking could result in some specific circumstance even if the guidelines are followed. [Pg.209]

A materials test equipment has been developed in Japan within the WE-NET project to investigate the environmental hydrogen embrittlement of specimens in high-pressure hydrogen up to 10 MPa at different temperature levels between 20 K and 1500 K. Additions of various gaseous inhibitors have been examined as a preventive technique to arrest crack growth in the materials [129]. [Pg.199]

As the laminate industry grew, this anisotropic behavior was accepted and fabrication techniques adapted to it. For example, expansion and contraction space was left between wall panels, very strong adhesives were developed for bonding the product to substrates, special substrates were qualified, and where it was necessary to cut holes into the laminates the corners were radiused to prevent cracking from stress concentration. [Pg.531]

Stress relief is of little practical value as a means of preventing stress-corrosion cracking in austenitic steels, as cracking occurs at quite low stress levels even in fully softened material and it is difflcult to ensure that stresses are reduced to a safe level in a real structure. Catalysts were expensive, however, so the petroleum industry did not solve the problem of cheap, lead-free, knock-free gasoline until the 1970s, after General Motors adopted the catalytic converter. Lead compounds inactivate the catalysts, and sophisticated catalytic cracking techniques had to be developed to replace the fuel additive. Ironically, an even more difficult job was finding a substitute for the protective coating that tetraethyl lead formed on exhaust valve seats not even newly developed, extremely hard materials prevent wear and tear on them as well as tetraethyl lead did. [Pg.95]

The bulk densities of all the materials were determined using Archimedes method (AS 1774.5, 1979). The Vickers indentation technique was used to measure the hardness in each case. The applied load in the Vickers hardness tests was 10 kg for silicon nitrides and sialons. However, using the same load produced severe lateral cracking in silicon carbides around indents, which prevented the accurate measurement of the diagonals of indents. Therefore the load was reduced to 0.3 kg for silicon carbide samples. [Pg.540]

Recipient block The block in which the cores are placed is referred to as the recipient block. It is best to place the cores towards the center of this block in order to prevent cracking of the block. After the cores are inserted, place the TMA in 37 °C overnight, and then on the cold plate of the tissue embedding station with subsequent two to three 1-hourcycles of hot/cold to temper the array. Multiple sections from the block should be cut at the same time to prevent wastage of tissue. Incomplete sections should not be discarded these can be used for standardization of staining technique (see below). [Pg.48]
