The general approaches for the synthesis of poly(arylene ether)s include electrophilic aromatic substitution, nucleophilic aromatic substitution, and metal-catalyzed coupling reactions. Poly(arylene ether sulfone)s and poly(arylene ether ketone)s have quite similar structures and properties, and the synthesis approaches are quite similar in many respects. However, most of the poly(arylene ether sul-fone)s are amorphous while some of the poly(arylene ether)s are semicrystalline, which requires different reaction conditions and approaches to the synthesis of these two polymer families in many cases. In the following sections, the methods for the synthesis of these two families will be reviewed. [Pg.329]

The hydrosi(ly)lations of alkenes and alkynes are very important catalytic processes for the synthesis of alkyl- and alkenyl-silanes, respectively, which can be further transformed into aldehydes, ketones or alcohols by estabhshed stoichiometric organic transformations, or used as nucleophiles in cross-coupling reactions. Hydrosilylation is also used for the derivatisation of Si containing polymers. The drawbacks of the most widespread hydrosilylation catalysts [the Speier s system, H PtCl/PrOH, and Karstedt s complex [Pt2(divinyl-disiloxane)3] include the formation of side-products, in addition to the desired anh-Markovnikov Si-H addition product. In the hydrosilylation of alkynes, formation of di-silanes (by competing further reaction of the product alkenyl-silane) and of geometrical isomers (a-isomer from the Markovnikov addition and Z-p and -P from the anh-Markovnikov addition. Scheme 2.6) are also possible. [Pg.32]

DMAP has been found to improve the coupling reaction in solid phase peptide synthesis (4). Polypeptides synthesized via the DMAP-DCC method were found to be of higher purity compared to other methods of synthesis. In polymer chemistry, DMAP has been used for hardening of resins and in the synthesis of polyurethanes, (5) polycarbonates, (6) and polyphenyleneoxides (7) ... [Pg.73]

A divergent protocol for a solid-phase synthesis of 3-substituted 2,5-biarylfurans was reported. Thus, reaction of furan zincate A with polymer bound aryl bromide or iodide provides resin intermediates 61. Subsequent bromination-Suzuki coupling reaction followed by further transformations gives rise to structurally diverse 2,3,5-trisubstituted furans 68 in good overall yields and chemical purities <00TL5447>. [Pg.144]

Since one of the substrates is a cyclic alkene there is now the possibility of ring-opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP) occurring which would result in the formation of polymeric products 34 (n >1). Since polymer synthesis is outside the scope of this review, only alkene cross-metathesis reactions resulting in the formation of monomeric cross-coupled products (for example 30) will be discussed here. [Pg.181]

Polymers Catalytic reactions involving C=C bonds are widely used for the conversion of unsaturated fatty compounds to prepare useful monomers for polymer synthesis. Catalytic C-C coupling reactions of unsaturated fatty compounds have been reviewed by Biermann and Metzger [51]. Metathesis reactions involving unsaturated fatty compounds to prepare co-unsaturated fatty acid esters have been applied by Warwel et al. [52], Ethenolysis of methyl oleate catalyzed by ruthenium carbenes developed by Grubb yields 1-decene and methyl 9-decenoate (Scheme 3.6), which can be very useful to prepare monomers for polyolefins, polyesters, polyethers and polyamide such as Nylon 11. [Pg.64]

Preparative applications of these reactions have included work on peptide synthesis from amino-acids (suitably protected) using triphenyl phosphine (120)10 7 >108 or a polymer-bound aryldiphenylphosphine (128).109 Coupling is generally very efficient,107 but racemization problems occur in some reactions.108 109 A typical coupling reaction using (128) is outlined in Scheme 9. [Pg.69]

The Pd-catalyzed C-C coupling (Sonogashira coupling) was applied to polymer synthesis about 20 years ago [23-25], and has especially been developed for the synthesis of n-conjugated poly(aryleneethynylene)s (PAEs) (for reviews, see refs. [16,26-33]). Recently other synthetic routes for PAEs were also developed, e.g., the alkyne metathesis method [28, 34] and the coupling reaction of =C-MR3 with R X (M=Si [35, 36] or Sn [37, 38]). In this review, we are concerned with the synthesis and chemical properties of PAEs with heteroaromatic rings. [Pg.183]
