High surface activity

Perfluorinated carboxylic acids are corrosive liquids or solids. The acids are completely ionized in water. The acids are of commercial significance because of their unusual acid strength, chemical stabiUty, high surface activity, and salt solubiUty characteristics. The perfluoroaLkyl acids with six carbons or less are hquids the higher analogues are soHds (Table 1). [Pg.310]

Polarographic studies are reported on thioesters, mainly of the type (140) and (141), and on trichloroethylphosphonites. In the field of nucleotides and nucleosides it is found that ATP has a very high surface activity at the mercury electrode, which is strongly dependent upon complex formation with transition metals. The polarographic behaviour of cobalt complexes with triphenylphosphine and its oxide has been studied in order to estimate extraction efficiencies. [Pg.284]

Among various methods to synthesize nanometer-sized particles [1-3], the liquid-phase reduction method as the novel synthesis method of metallic nanoparticles is one of the easiest procedures, since nanoparticles can be directly obtained from various precursor compounds soluble in a solvent [4], It has been reported that the synthesis of Ni nanoparticles with a diameter from 5 to lOnm and an amorphous-like structure by using this method and the promotion effect of Zn addition to Ni nanoparticles on the catalytic activity for 1-octene hydrogenation [4]. However, unsupported particles were found rather unstable because of its high surface activity to cause tremendous aggregation [5]. In order to solve this problem, their selective deposition onto support particles, such as metal oxides, has been investigated, and also their catalytic activities have been studied. [Pg.391]

Phospholipids are amphiphilic compoimds with high surface activity. They can significantly influence the physical properties of emulsions and foams used in the food industry. Rodriguez Patino et al. (2007) investigated structural, morphological, and surface rheology of dipalmitoylpho-sphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine (DOPC) monolayers at air-water interface. DPPC monolayers showed structural polymorphisms at the air-water interface as a function of surface pressure and the pH of the aqueous phase (Fig. 6.18). DOPC monolayers showed a... [Pg.235]

FORMATION. Aqueous solutions of highly surface-active substances spontaneously tend to reduce interfacial energy of solute-solvent interactions by forming micelles. The critical micelle concentration (or, c.m.c.) is the threshold surfactant concentration, above which micelle formation (also known as micellization) is highly favorable. For sodium dodecyl sulfate, the c.m.c. is 5.6 mM at 0.01 M NaCl or about 3.1 mM at 0.03 M NaCl. The lower c.m.c. observed at higher salt concentration results from a reduction in repulsive forces among the ionic head groups on the surface of micelles made up of ionic surfactants. As would be expected for any entropy-driven process, micelle formation is less favorable as the temperature is lowered. [Pg.464]

Biosurfactants are commercially available compounds for the in sim or ex situ treatment of hydrocarbons and non-aqueous-phase hquids (NAPLs) in soil and groundwater. Surfactants are highly surface-active compounds that solubilize and/or mobilize contaminants in the subsurface. [Pg.413]

CftNBr-CTFNa (cationic-anionic) system. The common cat ionic-anionic mixture of HC surfactants is highly surface active (17), showing the strong interactions between the two oppositely charged surface active ions. Similar re.-sults have been observed in the case of CeNBr-CrFNa system. The "y-log C plot in Fig.5 illustrates such an interaction, lile can see that the 1i1 CeNBr-C-rFNa mixture is much more surface active than CsNBr or CjFNa, The cmc value of surfactants mixture is much more smaller than that of CaNBr or CyFNa, and the-yeme the mixed solution is very low (< 15 rnNrn- ) mixtures with various raolal... [Pg.191]

The anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS, was obtained from Merck, Darmstadt, Federal Republic of Germany. It has a stated purity of 99.99% and was used without further purification. Surface tension measurements gave no minimum in the surface tension at the critical micelle concentration, indicating that the sample did not contain highly surface active impurities. [Pg.227]

Cocaine Same as above also has sympathomimetic effects Same as above Procedures requiring high surface activity and vasoconstriction Topical or parenteral duration 1-2 h Toxicity CNS excitation, convulsions, cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, stroke... [Pg.571]

However, tandem mass spectrometry, as a separation technique, does have limitations. It cannot easily differentiate between isomeric and isobaric species, and, in complex matrices, the presence of components with a high surface activity can suppress the ionization of components with a lower surface activity, leading to the nondetection of analytes (66). Therefore, the combination of MS-MS with a readily available chromatographic separation method such as TLC affords analysts real benefits. [Pg.729]

Decause modem demulsifiers can readily migrate through oil due to their high surface activity, and can effectively promote coalescence, they perform very well with a minimum of agitation Earlier demulsifiers required significantly more agitation to produce an acceptable performance. [Pg.137]
