The HLB numbers decrease with increasing chain length, e.g., from 13.25 for sodium decane 1-sulfonate to 9.45 for the C18 homolog [72]. Typical HLB numbers for positional isomers range from 12.3 for sodium dodecane 1-sulfonate to 13.2 for the more hydrophilic 6 isomer [73]. The HLB numbers of alkanesulfonates are less influenced by the isomeric position of the functional group and by substituents than the cM values [68]. HLB numbers can be correlated with partition coefficients for the distribution of a surfactant between the aqueous and oily phases, which emphasizes that the partition coefficient is dependent on the carbon number [68].

Passive diffusion of sulfonamides into human red cells is determined by plasma dmg binding and lipid solubility. Apparent partition coefficients between chloroform and water at pH 7.4 show an almost linear relation with penetration constant for sulfonamides and a number of other acids. Penetration rates of sulfonamides into the aqueous humour and cerebrospinal fluid also correlate with partition coefficients (Fig. 5.11) moreover, as can be seen from the data in Fig. 5.12, the antibacterial effects of fatty acids and esters towards B. subtilis correlate with octanol/water partition coefficients.

The stability of the biphasic system with composition A can be measured by the stability ratio [31], AD/AO, which represents how far the system composition lies from the binodal in the two-phase region. As such, it can be regarded as a measure of phase incompatibility (which increases as AD/AO increases) and can be correlated with partition coefficients.
