Spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage is very rare. It is caused by a vascular malformation, hemostatic failure, coarctation of the aorta, inflammatory vascular disease, mycotic aneurysm or a vascular tumor such as ependymoma. Accumulating hematoma may compress the spinal cord. Suspicion is aroused if the cerebral angiogram is negative and the patient develops spinal cord signs. [Pg.354]

Neurological symptoms result from demyelination of the spinal cord and are potentially irreversible. The symptoms and signs characteristic of a vitamin B 2 deficiency include paresthesis of the hands and feet, decreased deep-tendon reflexes, unsteadiness, and potential psychiatric problems such as moodiness, hallucinations, delusions, and psychosis. Neuropsychiatric disorders sometimes develop independently of the anemia, particularly in elderly patients. Visual loss may develop as a result of optic atrophy. [Pg.112]

Each item of apparatus tested, all flexible cords, switches, fuses, plugs and socket outlets are in good serviceable condition except as stated. There is no sign of overloading of conductors or accessories except as stated. Apparatus tested includesjdoes not include Portable Appliances. [Pg.159]

An additional cause of weakness may be involvement of the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord, which is very conspicuous in infantile acid maltase deficiency. All three glycogenoses causing weakness are in fact due to generalized enzyme defects, but histological signs of denervation are not evident. [Pg.703]

Motor neuron disease is characterized clinically by weakness, muscle atrophy and spasticity. This illness, often termed Lou Gehrig s disease in the United States, is the most common adult-onset form of MND with a prevalence of approximately 2-3 per 100,000 people [1-3,10, 25, 28]. Each year in the United States, in excess of 5,000 people are diagnosed with ALS. In parts of the United Kingdom, 1 in =500 deaths are attributed to some form of MND. The principal clinical signs of ALS include progressive limb weakness, which may be symmetrical or asymmetrical atrophy of appendicular, bulbar and respiratory muscles and spasticity [1,2,26,28]. The paralysis/muscle atrophy and spasticity are the result of degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord/brain stem and motor cortex respectively. The onset of this illness is typically in the fifth or sixth decade of life affected individuals usually... [Pg.732]

Symptoms of DVT include unilateral leg swelling, pain, tenderness, erythema, and warmth. Physical signs may include a palpable cord and a positive Homans sign. [Pg.177]

Patients with advanced disease commonly present with back pain and stiffness due to osseous metastases. Untreated spinal cord lesions can lead to cord compression. Lower extremity edema can occur as a result of lymphatic obstruction. Anemia and weight loss are nonspecific signs of advanced disease. [Pg.726]
