The Number of Polyhedra with a Common Corner. The Electrostatic Valence Principle.—The number of polyhedra with a common corner can be determined by the use of an extended conception of electrostatic valence. Let ze be the electric charge of a cation and v its coordination number. Then the strength of the electrostatic valence bond going to each comer of the polyhedron of anions about it is defined as... [Pg.289]

We think there is a need to investigate the algebraic properties underlying the various graph and matrix representations in order to discover the properties which are common to every stereoisomerization, to every ligand partition and perhaps, to every coordination number. This attempt is necessary if we want to understand the maximum number of phenomena with a minimum number of concepts. [Pg.45]

In spite of the absence of periodicity, glasses exhibit, among other things, a specific volume, interatomic distances, coordination number, and local elastic modulus comparable to those of crystals. Therefore it has been considered natural to consider amorphous lattices as nearly periodic with the disorder treated as a perturbation, oftentimes in the form of defects, so such a study is not futile. This is indeed a sensible approach, as even the crystals themselves are rarely perfect, and many of their useful mechanical and other properties are determined by the existence and mobility of some sort of defects as well as by interaction between those defects. Nevertheless, a number of low-temperamre phenomena in glasses have persistently evaded a microscopic model-free description along those lines. A more radical revision of the concept of an elementary excitation on top of a unique ground state is necessary [3-5]. [Pg.97]

This same relationship between shift and coordination number is found with iodine compounds (38, 40), Tetrahedrally coordinated in KIO4 has a higher value of octahedrally coordinated F ion in IOe . If we extend this concept to Sn, the Mossbauer data 7,11) indicate that AR/R for Sn is positive and not negative as Gordanskii has recently proposed 4, 27). This conclusion agrees with that of Bocquet et al. (5), who showed by means of electron conversion in the radioactive decay of that il/ o) was larger in white tin than... [Pg.99]

The molecular structure of liquids is best analyzed using the concept of RDF. This is of particular importance in solute-solvent structures as it defines the solvation shells around the solute molecule. Therefore, we analyzed the solvation of the anion F using the RDF between the anion and the oxygen of the water molecules, as shown in Fig. 2. At least three solvation shells are well defined. The integration of these peaks defines the coordination number, or the number of water molecules in each solvation shell. The first shell that ends at 3.15 A with a maximum at 2.65 A has, on average, 6.6 molecules of water. The second shell,... [Pg.144]

Pauling (1929) introduced the concept of mean strength of the bond (Si) as a ratio of the valence with coordination number. He also formulated the principle of electrostatic valence, which establishes that the sum of the mean bond strengths for a given coordination polyhedron (P) coincides with the valence state—i.e.. [Pg.905]

The radius ratio is considered important because the central ion must be prevented from rattling around in a cavity (see Orgel, 1966). However, the radius ratio is not a rigorous prognosticator, since the concept applies to hard spheres. It has already been noted that ions may be polarizable and deformable, sometimes with a tendency to directional covalent bond formation. These properties affect models based on hard spheres and the extent to which the radius ratio determines the coordination number of a particular ligand. Thus, .. . we can accept the radius ratio rule as a useful, if imperfect, tool in our arsenal for predicting and understanding the behavior of ionic compounds. (Huheey, 1983). [Pg.11]

It is an unusual problem to construct a homogeneously distorted two-dimensional domain structure which allows us to cover the range of the hexagonal closely packed crystal up to a two-dimensional gas. For example, the concept of the paracrystal is based on the philosophy that every state of condensed matter has at least a micro-paracrystalline arrangement of segments within a distorted lattice of arbitrary symmetry with a defined coordination number. [Pg.66]

Claus first postulate was vigorously attacked by Karl Weltzien (1813—1870),40 while Hugo Schiff (1834—1915)43 attacked not only Claus first postulate but also his second. All of Claus three postulates reappeared modified almost four decades later in Werner s coordination theory. Claus third postulate closely adumbrates Werner s concepts of the coordination number and of the transition series between metal ammines and metal salt hydrates. [Pg.5]
