Reactions of the Hydroxyl Group. The hydroxyl proton of hydroxybenzaldehydes is acidic and reacts with alkahes to form salts. The lithium, sodium, potassium, and copper salts of sahcylaldehyde exist as chelates. The cobalt salt is the most simple oxygen-carrying synthetic chelate compound (33). The stabiUty constants of numerous sahcylaldehyde—metal ion coordination compounds have been measured (34). Both sahcylaldehyde and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde are readily converted to the corresponding anisaldehyde by reaction with a methyl hahde, methyl sulfate (35—37), or methyl carbonate (38). The reaction shown produces -anisaldehyde [123-11-5] in 93.3% yield. Other ethers can also be made by the use of the appropriate reagent. [Pg.505]

Heteroleptic complexes of uranium can be stabilized by the presence of the ancillary ligands however, the chemistry is dominated by methyl and benzyl ligands. Examples of these materials include UR4(dmpe) (R = alkyl, benzyl) and U(benzyl)4MgCl2. The former compounds coordinate "soft" chelating phosphine ligands, a rarity for the hard U(IV) atom. [Pg.335]

Most mordant dyes are monoazo stmctures. The most important feature of this class of dyes is excellent fastness to light and washing. Mordant dyes are available ia aU shades of the spectmm with the exceptioa of bright violets, blues, and greens. To be useful, the metal complexes must be stable, ie, must not demetallize when subjected to dyebath conditions and aU aftertreatment processes, especially repeated washings. A range of acetoacetylated lesins has been intioduced (68,69). The acetoacetoxy functionahty can be cioss-linked with melamine—formaldehyde resins, isocyanates, polyacrylates, and polyamines. It is possible to determine the concentration of certain metal ions by performing a titration in which the complexation of the metal is the essential reaction.
