Contrast normalization

The ability of the liver to act as a depot for vitamin Bi2 (B28, G13) enables us to use this vitamin as an index of proper hepatic function. Hepatic disorders lead to an increased Bi2-binding in the serum (J5, R3), suggesting that the blood assumes a greater role in the conservation of B12. We have reported that patients with liver disease excreted invariably less than 10 fig of Bi2> 8 hours after a 50-[ig intramuscular load dose of the vitamin. In contrast, normal subjects excreted 24-40 pg, i.e., 50-80% of the vitamin in the same test (B14). These results were correlated with various chemical determinations indicative of hepatic disorders (Bl). In Table 16 the clinical diagnosis and the various liver-... [Pg.233]

Compare this situation with that for normal and sickle cell hemoglobins. The two COX enzymes are both fully functional and differ by a single conservative amino acid replacement. In contrast, normal hemoglobin is fully functional but sickle cell hemoglobin is not and these differ by a single nonconservative amino acid replacement (see chapter 11). [Pg.382]

Reactions under quaternisation of exocyclic R2P-substituents have so far been applied exclusively to benzophospholide derivatives. The most convenient approach involves treatment of the substrate with an appropriate alkyl halide [27, 31, 35] or acrylic acid (Scheme 10) [27]. The quaternisation products formed are in general isolable without complication if pure starting materials have been employed as is normally the case for zwitterionic substrates. Anionic benzophospholides such as 29 and 30 are, in contrast, normally only accessible as crude product mixtures whose quaternisation affords mixtures of several phosphonium salts. Separation of the desired product may in these cases require lengthy work-up procedures and result in substantially lower yields [31]. [Pg.186]

Defective phagocytosis by neutrophils in CGD can be demonstrated by the classical nitroblue terazolium test by the absence of dark-blue staining of the cytoplasm, in contrast, normal neutrophils with efficient phagocytic function exhibit dark-blue cytoplasmic staining (84). Flow cytometry is also a powerful tool for the study of CGD (85). [Pg.251]

By contrast, normal hemolysate (right tube) is sufficiently transparent that print can easily be read through it. Figure 31-14 Solubility test for Hb S. In contrast, normal aryl bromides are much less reactive than aryl iodides. Some examples are shown in Tab. 3.8 [117]. [Pg.103]

Particles need to be of a size much smaller than the cutoff pore diameter to reach to the target tumor sites. By contrast, normal vasculature is impermeable to drug associated carriers larger than 2-4 nm compared to free, unassociated drug molecules (Drummond et al. 1999 Fu et al. 1998 Firth 2002). [Pg.411]

Various complexing agents may be incorporated into the adsorbent to permit improved resolution of saturated and unsaturated lipid classes and molecular species (silver nitrate) and the resolution of vic-hydroxylated and nonhydroxylated lipid classes (borate). A practical combination of HPTLC with MS, however, has not yet materialized. In contrast, normal phase HPLC has been effectively combined with online ESI-MS and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)-MS for analyses of both lipid classes and molecular species (see below). [Pg.2475]

Optical phonons, in contrast, normally possess low group velocities, so that impurity dominated elastic scattering times are long compared to those of most acoustic phonons. On the other hand, lifetimes against anharmonic decay typically lie in the picosecond regime, and thereby dominate the observable transport properties of these phonons. [Pg.502]

The pinocytosis by fibroblasts of j8-D-2-acetamido-2-deoxyhexosidase excreted by cultural skin fibroblasts from a patient with I-cell disease was not enhanced by neuraminidase treatment of the enzyme. The uptake of the normal plasma enzyme was minimal and this was not appreciably enhanced by neuraminidase treatment. In contrast, normal seminal fluid j3-D-2-acetamido-deoxyhexosidase was readily pinocytosed regardless of neuraminidase treatment. Thus it was concluded that a neuraminidase deficiency in I-cell disease may not be directly responsible for excessive extracellular enzyme. [Pg.383]

Frequently, a wine microbiologist does not have time to isolate microorganisms from a sample. Therefore, it is easier to examine a sample under a wet mount using a microscope equipped with phase-contrast. Normally, a minimal population of 10 cells per milliliter is necessary to be seen microscopically. As such, several microscopic fields should be examined and/or samples should be centrifuged to concentrate microorganisms prior to microscopic evaluation. [Pg.191]
