Continuous quality improvement implementation

Planning quality improvement, implementing the plan, analysing the results and re-plamung is a continuous cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act). Interrelated improvement plans are deployed at all levels of the laboratoiy (corporate, department, process, individual). It is essential to note that the commitment of laboratory personnel is maximized when such personnel is actively involved in the generation and deployment of the improvement plans. 

So what does this mean for pharmacy practice More pharmacists must understand continuous quality improvement and be able to develop, implement, and measure the outcomes of such a plan. This could provide an opportunity for a community pharmacy report card (quality measurement) system on which pharmacies can compete on the basis of quality. Such a system may provide a great opportunity for pharmacies to advertise quality outcomes to payers and patients. If such a system is successful, quality could drive patient choices and payer decisions. Ultimately the pharmacies with the highest quality may get more market share or obtain higher reimbursement rates for certain services. 

As pharmacists who implement value-added services evaluate all they have accomplished, it is wise to do a little continuous quality improvement. They should identify the mistakes that they made along the way and think about how they can avoid making them again. They can also identify how they could have streamlined the process and created a better workflow for the service. Lastly, they may have conducted the project as a pilot project. These pharmacists will need to think about how they will expand the project in a seamless manner.

The Continual Quality Improvement (CQI) for QBE implementation is designed. However, there may be certain weaknesses in various aspects of the implementation which should be improved.

Table 1 presents key steps in developing continuous quality improvement activities in school mental health. We emphasize that implementation of a cqi program is a process that takes time, money, and effort from all who are involved in the program, including its leaders, staff, collaborating stakeholders, advisory board members, and funders.

Most QI programs build upon an established quality assurance (QA) process. Quality assurance can be defined as a formal and systematic process in which problems in delivering health care are identified, solutions to the problems are developed and implemented, and follow-up monitoring then is carried out [30]. QA begins with problem identification. After possible sources of the problem are determined, solutions are developed and implemented. Then, the results of the intervention or solution are evaluated to determine whether or not the problem has been resolved. By incorporating a goal of continual improvement, a QA process can contribute to quality improvement activities. 

The company has planned and implemented the monitoring, measurement, analysis, and improvement processes needed to demonstrated conformity of the product and has ensured conformity of the quality management system, continuity of improvement, and the effectiveness of the quality management system. 

In summary, we reviewed all the components and instrument choices for screen automation. To set up a new screen lab, one should decide whether to implement semi-automated or fully automated systems based on throughput needs and available capital funding. Since both instrumentation and screen assay technologies advance quickly, continual testing and evaluation of new technologies are necessary to stay abreast of new developments in the field and continue to improve throughput and quality, and also reduce screening costs. 

An example of how an evidence-based quality framework can be used to improve healthcare has been seen with improvements in stroke services in the United Kingdom following the implementation of the National Service Framework (NSF) for older people in 2001— The Biannual Sentinel Stroke Audit for 2008 has recently been published, and it demonstrates a continued significant improvement in stroke services. In terms of healthcare structure, 96% of hospitals in the United Kingdom now offer specialist stroke services, with an increasing number of specialist stroke unit beds 98% of hospitals employ a physician with a specialist interest in stroke. There also have been improvements in process of care measures, including the uptake of thrombolysis services and secondary prevention measures. A similar initiative has been beneficial for coronary heart disease and more recently has been broadly applied to cancer. 

The quality improvement cycle consists of four phases that are continuously re-implemented plan, observe and analyze, learn, and act (Figure 16-1).
