Another kairomonal interaction, the detection of chemical cues from predators, has been found in the interaction between Argyrodes trigonum (Theridiidae), a klep-toparasitic species that lives in the web of and occasionally consumes its linyphiid host F. communis (as F. pyramitela). Upon contact with A. trigonum cuticular chemicals, F. communis responds by retreating, in contrast to the attack behavior elicited by cuticular compounds from other prey species (Suter et al., 1989). [Pg.136]

Although most work on the effect of secondary metabolites on digestive processes has occurred in the phlorotannin-herbivore system, thousands of other nonphlorotannin metabolites have been identified as putative deterrents.1 Studies of some of these have shown that the metabolites can have negative post-ingestive consequences.190191 And, although little work has been done on these secondary metabolites with respect to consumer digestion processes per se, the complexity of the interactions is apparent from studies that suggest that the effectiveness of the chemical defense is linked to prey nutritional quality,36 37 calcification,37 192-195 and recent prey/consumer history.32... [Pg.400]

The model describes a three level vertical food-chain, where the resource or vegetation u is consumed by herbivores u, which in turn are prey on by top predators w. The parameters a, b and c represent the respective growth rates of each species in the absence of interspecific interactions (fci = fc2 = 0). The functions fi x,y) describe interactions between... [Pg.409]
