What was once a terrorist-style, random crime led to innovative and effective product protection. Not only is safety of a product important when reducing products liability, so is the design of packaging. Designers must consider ways in which someone can access edible or other kinds of products and prevent tampering before the products reach consumers. [Pg.72]

Education is needed to teach consumers modem marketing trends. Most low-income Egyptians do not differentiate between branded and non-branded packaged items, especially when it comes to food and electronics. The difference between the prices of branded versus non-branded products still not well understood in the Egyptian culture. In emerging markets, customers do not realize the full benefits of products some even do not know how to access different providers offerings. Consumer product abuse, on the other hand, is a microbiological risk factor that is generally not as easily controlled as product accessibility reduction. Consumer abuse can come in a variety of forms and often bypasses the safeguards built into a well-designed primary container. It appears that the only approach that appears to be viable would be the one in which the product is contained in a replaceable, access restricted package that protects the product and the consumer from overexposure and cross-contamination. Examples of low to medium risk bulk dispensers would include dispensers that minimize direct contact with the nozzle, utilize automatic rather than manual dispensing, and restrict easy access to the bulk compartment. By far the safest dispensers are those that use replaceable sanitary sealed bags or cartridges that include a new nozzle or delivery device. [Pg.736]
