Constraining structure

The transformation from spheres to cyhnders is a peculiar example for the self-adjustment of the molecular conformation. The switching shape can be regarded as an example for the principle of quasi equivalency established by A. Klug for the self-assembly of biomolecules and viruses [145] for the sake of an improved intermolecular packing, the molecules adopt a conformation different from the minimum energy one. This also demonstrates that shape control does not mean a fully constrained structure. Similar to biomolecules, the combination of flexible macromolecules and self-assembly principles is a powerful strategy for preparation of molecules with well-defined but switchable shape [23]. [Pg.143]

Insertion of two overlapping i, i + 4 lactam bridges in the terminally protected hexa-peptide Boc-Lys-Lys-Ala-Ala-Asp-Asp-OPac results in a highly conformationally constrained structure 27 (Scheme 16).[l52 CD spectra showed a rigid structure that exhibited only partial melting at high temperature, while NMR studies in TFE-d3/H20 revealed a predominantly a-helical structure, as judged by observed NOEs. [Pg.778]

Carbon dioxide is the drying agent of choice if the goal is to stabilize kinetically constrained structure, and materials prepared by this low-temperature route are referred to by some people as carbogeh In general, carbogels are also different from aerogels in surface functionality, in particular hydrophilicily. [Pg.43]

The piperazine-2-carboxylic acid scaffold 4 is well suited for a combinatorial approach as it is a small, constrained structure with three functional groups (one carboxylic acid and two amines) that may be conveniently substituted by solid-phase chemistry. Orthogonal protection of the two amino groups could easily be carried out on a large scale by solution-phase chemistry18 (Scheme 1). [Pg.80]

Purple cloud of potassium permanganate diffusing outward as a solid piece dissolves in a beaker of water, seen from above. The solid piece (black) takes up much less space than the solution of potassium permanganate ions. This demonstrates the principle of diffusion, where a liquid or gas will spread out to fill the available space. This in turn demonstrates the fundamental differences between a solid and a gas or liquid. A solid is a rigid, constrained structure, which contrasts with the fluid, chaotic nature of a liquid or gas. The molecules of a solid are bonded, but solvation or melting breaks the bonds between the molecules. (Courtesy of Andrew Lambert Photography/Science Photo Library)... [Pg.76]

Chiral C2-symmetric ansa-metallocenes, also referred to as bridged metallocenes, have found extensive use as catalysts that effect C-C bond-forming processes in an enantioselective manner [3]. In general, bridged ethylene(bis-tetrahydroin-denyl)-metallocene dichlorides (1-3, Scheme 1) put forth attractive options for the design of asymmetric reactions because of their geometrically-constrained structure and relative ease of preparation. [Pg.415]

The model is restricted to compounds that display acid-base bonding and therefore it cannot be used to describe metallic or organic bonding. Within these limits, the Valence Sum Rule is found to be widely obeyed and has proved remarkably useful in the analysis of inorganic structures. The Equal Valence Rule is less universal and fails when the environment of an atom is distorted as a result of its internal electronic structure or as the result of the application of the Distortion Theorem in constrained structures. In some highly constrained structures the Valence Sum Rule may also be violated, indicating the presence of internal strain and flagging the possible existence of a complex crystal chemistry. [Pg.427]

The results described above, yielding a relative energy of only 15 kcal/ mol between the reactant and the intermediate state, are not fully conclusive, since the structures in Fig. 12 are too severely constrained to be considered as good models of the active site. However, if the structures are released, there are large movements of the protein residues and the water molecules, and the stabilization disappears. Either the constrained structures are too... [Pg.105]

Before moving on any further, we first consider the effectiveness of the mass spectral classifiers in reducing the number of candidates for selection. Of the 29 compounds, 15 were already reduced to the final, small (< 35) number of candidates using 95% probability classifiers alone. No additional classifiers were necessary (or possible) to reduce this number further, nor did calculated properties separate these candidates further. This means over half these compounds required only the default substructure information to constrain structure generation adequately. In a further 4 cases, the reduction in candidates to their final number (again below 35) was achieved by using an additional classifier or other restrictions, and no further elimination occurred with calculated properties. One further compound experienced only a slight additional re-... [Pg.404]
