Constipation, habitual constipation, uremia, acute intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal conditions. 

It is an anionic detergent which softens the stool by water accumulation in intestinal lumen and emulsifies the colon contents. It is indicated in obstetric, habitual, geriatric, paediatric constipation or when straining is to be avoided (recent myocardial infarction, severe hypertension, post-operative cases, abdominal hernia), fissures, haemorrhoids and bed ridden patients. Dose 100-200 mg/day. 

Main symptoms in a moderate case Constipation or habitual constipation, dry stool, irregular bowel movement, distending pain of the abdomen. 

In a moderate case of constipation or in a case of chronic habitual constipation, moistening the intestines, increasing the fluid and activating the Qi are more important than clearing heat and purging the stagnation. 

Huo Ma Ren is a sweet and neutral herb, and it can either promote bowel movement or tonify the Qi and blood. It is particularly suitable for treating constipation after surgical operations or delivery of a baby and in patients who suffer from chronic diseases or have a weak constitution. It can also be used to treat hemorrhoids and habitual constipation. 

This formula is able to moisten the intestines, drain the heat, promote the Qi movement and move the bowels. It is used for treating constipation due to dryness in the intestines. Patients may suffer from chronic habitual constipation with hard feces that are difficult to defecate, frequent urination, a dry, yellow tongue coating and a deep and rapid pulse. 

This formula is particularly useful for habitual constipation when there is Yin deficiency with heat in the intestines. 

In habitual constipation due to sluggishness and atony of the lower bowel, and for digestive disorders generally. Doses for chronic constipation, firstly 1/2 to 1 teaspoonful at bedtime, afterwards 5-10 drops before each meal, of the fluid extract.

Comment Once constipation has been relieved, the use of these pills should be stopped since it is not good to take Rhubarb habitually. 

Birch s Pills for Habitual Constipation. Take 4 drachm alcoholic extract of rhubarb, 24 gmns extract of taraxacum, and 2 grains sulphate of quinine. Mix together and make into 12 pills. One to bo t en either on rising in the moming or at dinner time, or even at both periods when the constipation is very obstinate. This is a very gentle stomachic and tonic evacuant, particularly useful for the delicate. 

A European monograph indicates use for habitual constipation, in case where soft stool is desired as in cases of anal fissures, hemorrhoids, and post-rectal surgery irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis as a dietary supplement where increases in dietary fiber are required and adjuvant therapy for diarrhea (escop 2).
