An indication of the effectiveness of such field treatment is seen in Figure 7.12, which compares the amount of water lost by evaporation from two small adjacent lakes in Illinois. Treatment of North Lake (ordinate) with commercial hexadecanol was begun in late June 1957 untreated South Lake was the control (abscissa). Prior to treatment the evaporation losses from the two lakes were identical, as shown by the 45° line in the figure. After treatment was begun, however, the loss of water from North Lake fell considerably behind that from South Lake. By the end of the summer a difference of about 40% in the water loss was observed. This was equivalent to about 7600 gallons of water saved per pound of hexadecanol used. For areas where water is scarce —the southwestern United States, Israel, and western Australia, for example —such conservation of water is highly valued, and research continues to look for methods to improve the efficiency of this technique. 

Since initially Platform A will provide the major source of gas to meet the contractual commitments of the joint venture portners of the Australian North West Shelf gos project for the supply of gas to the State Energy Commission of Western Australia and also the early build-up in LNG production, and due to its location in on extremely remote port of Australia, every effort hos been made to produce a conservative and reliable design.

Our search for attractants is focused on the Tephritid family of fruit flies which Includes species that are of economic importance in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. It is estimated that the olive fly, Dacus oleae. causes ten percent fruit drop in European olives. Of the Infested fruit remaining on the trees, 25 percent of the flesh is destroyed (48). A conservative estimate of the annual cost of the recent Medfly infestation in California, not including capital outlays, is 59 million for chemical controls, 38 million for quarantine and fumigation, and 260 million in crop losses (49). It is estimated that 70% of the susceptible fruit in Egypt is infested by the Medfly (50) and a 50 million control program has been started there.

A third example illustrating the same type of system involves people in some hot areas, such as Australia, who have tried to conserve precious water supplies in ponds or leikes by covering the surface with a (saturated) monolayer of an insoluble substance, like a fatty alcohol. They hoped in this way to reduce evaporation. For long-term use this method has only been moderately successful, but the fact is established that such monolayers do inhibit water transport. We will return briefly to this in sec. 3.9.
