The surface of the polyimide film of was observed by SEM to be as flat as that of The multilayer film of was prepared on a silicon wafer which contained evaporated aluminum lines in order to examine the coating ability of the present LB films. Figure 3(a) exhibits the mechanical stylus probe (Talystep) pattern of aluminum lines (30 nm high and 2000 nm wide) and (b) shows the lines after 120 layers of were deposited. Since the depth was observed as 30 nm in both cases, it is concluded that the multilayer film can conformally coat the uneven surface. This feature can be directly observed in the photographs of Figure 4 where a 60 layer film of is coated on an aluminum line (200 nm of high and 2000 nm wide).

The most common conformal coatings are derived from polyurethanes, acrylics, and epoxies the more special formulations for high-temperature performance are based on silicones, diallyl-phthalate esters, and polyimides. An example of a vapor deposited conformal coating is Parylene. It is obtained by vapor deposition of p-xylylene, which is formed as a transient by dehydrogenation of p-xylene at high temperature, and polymerization on the surface of the object to be coated. Because p-xylylene monomer is not stable, it is advantageous to work with the cyclic dimer, di-p-xylylene (paracyclophane), which, upon heating under reduced pressure, will produce the transient monomer which converts to the polymer at low temperatures.

Oynasolve 210 was developed to fill a widespread need for a solvent that would dissolve RTV silicones and silicone conformal coatings effectively at room temperature. Dynasolve 210 dissolves silicones quickly and effectively, but it contains methylene chloride, and may aftack other polymers or coatings, such as epoxies and urethanes. Dynasolve 220,225, and 230, while not quite as fast as Oynasolve 210. contain no chlorinated solvenis and are more selective. In most cases. Dynasolve 230 is fastest, followed by Dynasolve 225, and then Dynasolve 220.
