Computer Burroughs

Spectra were simulated by a Burroughs 6800 mainframe computer at the University of Detroit and plotted on a Hewlett-Packard 7470A digital plotter.

As a result of the observed limitations inherent in all indices (but the nevertheless high value placed on them as predictive tools), researchers have continued over the years to devise various charts, models, and computer programs as aids or replacements for them. These include the Kunz Model, Burroughs NTU Model, Captain BAISPEC Program, and Cooling Tower Carbonate Equilibrium (CTCE) Model. 

It should be evident that SCFC is the most important programme in the LMTO package. It is in SCFC that ground-state properties are calculated, and it is here that one may change the atomic radius and atomic number, and introduce spin polarisation. Also SCFC is computed rapidly, and typically it uses 20 s of Burroughs 7800 time. In comparison, LMTO (500 points in the Brillouin zone) uses 2 min and DDNS 1 min. 

The application of computer calculations to DTA studies of the crystallization kinetics of polymers was described by Gornick (51). Calculations were made of the temperature of a polymeric sample during the cooling process using a Burroughs Mode 5500 computer. Morie et al. (52) used an IBM Model 1130 computer to prepare standard vapor-pressure plots of In P versus 1/T the vapor-pressure data being obtained from DTA or DSC curves. The heat of vaporization was calculated by the Haggenmacher method as modified by Fishtine. 

The first electronic calculator was introduced by the BeU Punch Company of the UK in 1961. This contained discrete components rather than ICs (Ohlman 1990). Universal Data Machines was the first American company to make electronic calculator using metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) chips from Texas Instruments. The first hand-held calculator was developed in 1967. In 1968, Burroughs produced the first computer to use an integrated circuit. 

Equations (la), (2) and (3) were combined and coded for solution on a Burroughs Datatron 205 computer. Properties of the most common cryogenic fluids (oxygen, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen and helium) were expressed as a function of pressure and the problem solved for various. initial pressure conditions.
