Compressor and pump drivers

In older plants which used a reciprocating compressor for the recycle, a recycle cylinder was often mounted together with the other cylinders on the reciprocating frame. Sometimes special rotary compressors, so-called mole pumps were also used, with the unique feature that compressor and electric driver were completely enclosed in a common high-pressure shell. In old Casale plants, the makeup gas was introduced into the high pressure recycle loop and acted as the driving fluid of an injector which compressed the recycle gas. 

The primary function of the lube oil console is to supply clean, cool lubricating oil to the bearings of the compressor and its driver. The console is a package of equipment, which is supplied by the compressor vendor and usually includes an oil reservoir, two pumps (a primary and a spare), two filters or filter elements in a duplex-type arrangement, coolers, and associated controls. A typical lube oil console is shown in Exhibit 4-20. When placing a iube oil console around a compressor, the designer must adhere to clearance requirements for operation and maintenance of the unit. First, there should be sufficient room to remove the cooler tube bundle. Second, the space required to pull the filter elements must be considered—there can be no physical obstruction over the filters that...

A. Pikulik and H. E. Diaz [Chem. Eng, 84, 106-122 (Oct. 10, 1977)] presented a graphical method for estimating the fabricated cost of distillation columns and pressure vessels, storage tanks, fired heaters, pumps and drivers, compressors and drivers, and vacuum equipment. 

Massive canyovo of liquid from the rdlux drum destroyed internals of the overhead compressor and damaged its turbine driver. The incident followed a fire at the product pump, whidi made it and its spare inopmhle. The accumulator level rose past the compressor trip level, but the trip failed to activate. 

Avoid control valves by controlling pump/compressor by adjusting driver speed (for example, use of VSD for a motor and use of steam turbine governor control valve)... 

Install critical pumps/compressors in pairs (with one in operation and another on standby). Install electric motor for the first pump/compressor, and consider an alternative driver such as steam/gas turbines and diesel engines...

Rotating equipment including turbines, electric driven pumps, compressors or generators handling combustible, flammable or toxic materials, and use drivers equal to or greater than 1000 HP. Process critical equipment also includes rotating equipment that is categorized as critical by a Process Hazard Analysis. 

Steam turbines are used as drivers to turn pumps, compressors, and electric generators. High-pressure steam is directed into buckets designed to turn a rotor and provide rotational energy. Steam turbines serve the same function as electric motors. A typical motor is composed of stator windings, rotor and shaft, bearings and seals, conduit box, frame, fan, lubrication system, and shroud. Steam turbines and motors are two of the most popular devices used by industry as drivers.
