Compliance aids

When prescribing medications for the elderly, it is important to consider physical disability, visual impairment, the shape or color of medications (ability to differentiate), and the belief system of the patient. It would be beneficial to have healthcare professionals review the technique of using certain devices and to discuss the use of compliance aids. 

Both styles of eye drop dispenser are fitted with an orbit-shaped eye piece designed to ensure that the drop goes into the eye rather than down the cheek. The design of the eye piece also ensures that the bottle cannot touch the eye, preventing contamination. These compliance aids can be prescribed on the NHS. 

An oral syringe is a compliance aid as it allows for accurate measurement of small doses of liquid medication. The syringe itself is graduated and accompanied by a bung, with a hole in the centre, which fits into the neck of the medicine bottle.

Use mechanical compliance aids as needed (sectioned prU boxes or trays, comphance packaging, color-coding). 

Dose administration aids, also called compliance aids, may help the patient to keep the overview. These weekly pill boxes are reusable boxes that allow medicines to be housed in grid like compartments, in preparation for sequential dosing according to a prescribed regime.
