Complementary technologies

Generally it can be said that optical systems will assume an ever increasing market share (depending on the achievement of uniform standards) of the data storage market which is currently dominated by magnetic systems. Additionally they will advance iato new appHcations. Up to the end of the twentieth century, complementary technologies rather than a conflict between optical and magnetic mass memories are likely. [Pg.164]

Complementary technologies such as conventional non-destructive examination (NDE) and fracture mechanics are needed to size and determine the significance of defects revealed by AE. [Pg.38]

If this technology is not combined with complementary technologies such as bioremediation or air sparging, it is not applicable to heavier organics such as long-chain hydrocarbons or complex contaminants such as heavy fuels that contain compounds with low vapor pressure. [Pg.493]

This technology needs to be combined with complementary technologies such as pump and treat to recover groundwater from high-yielding aquifers. [Pg.493]

Hydrogen separations with metal hydrides can be viewed as complementary technology to cryogenic and adsorption (PSA) processes. Attributes of this new process are listed in Table II,... [Pg.236]

Note, however, that one of the most important lessons from work over many years on system dependability is the fact that fault prevention, removal and tolerance should not be regarded as alternatives, but rather as complementary technologies, all of which have a role to play, and whose effective combination is crucial—with fault forecasting being used to evaluate the degree of success that is being achieved. [Pg.147]

As is argued elsewhere [14], creation of a consortium is an important response of participating companies that realize they cannot dominate the field, and actually need access to complementary technology protected by patents owned by others. [Pg.579]

Hence, the results show the potential of toxicoproteomics to serve as a complementary technology to microarray-based approach. [Pg.870]

The use of catalysts, furthermore, is required in the processes of wastewater purification by reducing treatments. Catalysts also find also application as complementary technologies to other wastewater treatment methods, such as in the control of odour, VOC, N2O and NOx emissions from wet oxidation treatments (for example, in the wet oxidation of industrial sludges), and of odours and VOC emitted from biological processes (aerobic and anaerobic). Although usually commercial catalysts are used in these cases, there are often unpredicted effects in treating complex mixtures and thus more specific catalysts would be preferable. The same is valid for catalysts used to convert stripped VOC from contaminated groundwater. [Pg.61]

Precombustion and postcombustion pollutant removal technologies should not be considered to be in competition. Rather, they are complementary technologies that should be used together for maximum benefit. Many precombustion processes are low in cost, but cannot remove all of the pollutants, while... [Pg.2715]

Combining complementary technologies is beneficial for identifying and reconfirming new chemical scaffolds that can be exploited in a fragment-based approach. For cost and efficiency reasons it is advantageous to select one leading... [Pg.119]

The complementarity of diversity and focussed approaches can be seen in clinical practice. HIV protease inhibitors are all from the rational, structure-based design school of drug discovery, whereas the non-nucleoside HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitors have almost all originated from diversity screening. As combination therapy is the best way to treat HIV infection, this is evidence of the benefits of complementary technologies to fight disease. [Pg.118]
