Compile-incremental

In this second empirical approach, which has also been used for C NMR spectra, predictions are based on tabulated chemical shifts for classes of structures, and corrected with additive contributions from neighboring functional groups or substructures. Several tables have been compiled for different types of protons. Increment rules can be found in nearly any textbook on NMR spectroscopy.

Clinical documentation of sensitization, or kindling, patterns in humans is difficult to compile, but Post and colleagues have noted that traumatic life events become less evident with incremental episodes. Sixty percent of the patients who have symptoms that meet criteria for their first episode of MDD have identifiable precipitating events, as contrasted with 36% of those with two or more episodes (Post 1994). 

Further, ions are not hard, billiard ball like spheres. Since the wave functions that describe the electronic distribution in an atom or ion do not suddenly drop to zero amplitude at some particular radius, we must consider the surfaces of our supposedly spherical ions to be somewhat fuzzy. A more subtle complication is that the apparent radius of an ion increases (typically by some 6 pm for each increment) whenever the coordination number increases. Shannon10 has compiled a comprehensive set of ionic radii that take this into account. Selected Shannon-type ionic radii are given in Appendix F these are based on a radius for O2- of 140 pm for six coordination, which is close to the traditionally accepted value, whereas Shannon takes the reference value as 126 pm on the grounds that it gives more realistic ionic sizes. Very little information about this salt is available. According to Unezawa et al.,52 the anhydrous salt, prepared by dehydrating the 4-hydrate is stable up to 575°C. Above this temperature it decomposes to the oxide. No thermodynamic data, not even at 298.15 K, are listed in the standard compilations. Enthalpy increments were measured calorimetrically by Sanyai and Nag.14... 

The chiroptical properties of alkyl halides have not attracted much attention in recent years and advances have been incremental or incidental. But this may be a field that has lain fallow long enough to merit renewed cultivation. We will note here some of the reviews and compilations—some of which are rather old—that summarize the current position and will comment on several recent results that suggest areas that might now be open to fruitful research. 

Take the case of matrix multiplication, this would usually be implemented in FORTRAN as a direct translation of the expression in Table XI which is the usual "row by column and add" sequence of operations. The evaluation of a single Cjk does not satisfy the criteriof given above because although B k is a vector with unit address increment from component to component Aj, is not and its address increment is N. This of course is a function of the FORTRAN compiler and can be circumvented by storing A in an "unnatural" order (i.e. by rows, giving the transpose of A in the usual method of storage by columns) but this is not usually worthwhile because of the potential for confusion.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Ziircher s massive compilation of chemical shifts of 18-H and 19-H signals, and increments produced by structural features in the steroid nucleus, is augmented by the publication of similar data for 344 steroids obtained by microbiological hydroxylations, and subsequent transformations. The compounds are mainly 5a-androstane derivatives, and include hydroxy- and oxo-functions at almost all the ring positions, as well as their derivatives and polyfunctional compounds. Solvent shifts are also reported. A set of diagrams illustrates the profiles and chemical shifts of signals due to methine protons in the C/fOH system at all the main steroid positions. ... 

Several workers have employed features of the molecular electrostatic potential surface to study the pK s of amines. Nagy, Novak, and Aszasz [340] found good linear correlations between the pK s of pyridines, anilines, and aliphatic amines and the minima of the electrostatic potentials for these compounds. They used the CNDO/2 method [341] as well as a bond-increment method with data from Perrin s 1972 compilation [342] for their study. The increment in the number of publications reveals that the field is still topical and the analytical potential of these instmments is of current interest. Rozhitskii, two years back, compiled publications by year (a), on the use of the ECL detectors with CE, FIA, and chromatography (CH) published from 1960 to July, 2009, and (b), on the use of CE with the ECL, EC, laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), SP, and CL detectors published from 2000 to July, 2009 and found the increased number of publications of CE with ECL year after year.
