The technologies to collect and to generate electricity by solar cells are already in the market. However, competitiveness of PV systems is high only for remote areas, communication and satellite applications. The continued research is needed to reduce costs and improve performance of PV systems. 

Adhesives made from blood and casein were some of the first used in the wood products industry. They have been replaced in many applications by petroleum-based adhesives, which show improved performance or better economics. Despite this competition, they remain important in certain specialty areas due to their unique curing and bonding characteristics. 

Bryan (1977) highlighted the obvious fact that in a competitive environment the percentage of total revenue that represents profit is quite small. This lead to the conclusion that there is considerable leverage for profit improvement through improved performance. 

Epoetin alfa has received orphan drug status from the FDA for the treatment of the anemia of prematurity, HIV infection, and myelodysplasia. The utility of very high-dose therapy in other hematological disorders, such as sickle cell anemia, still is under study. Highly competitive athletes have used epoetin alfa to increase their hemoglobin levels ( blood doping ) and improve performance. 

Many sports or leisure activities have a biomechanical basis. Understanding of the underlying biomechanical processes can lead to improved performance. Yet, there are Hmits to performance that cause frustrations for competitive athletes. Hence, additional factors are sometimes employed to expand these limits. A brief discussion of some of these factors is given here.
