Compatibilizers coupling agents

Performance of other additives Fillers arc instrumental in improving the performance of other additives. Antistatics, blowing agents, catalysts, compatibilizers, coupling agents, organic flame retardants, impact modifiers, rheology modifiers, thermal and UV stabilizers are all influenced by a fillet s presence.

Like compatibilizers, coupling agents are used to improve the adhesion of Alters and reinforcements, for example, glass Abers or carbon Abers to the polymer matrix... 

Rubber-resin heterophase systems are classified as (1) resin as the disperse phase, (2) rubber as the disperse phase, (3) grafted rubber latex particles as the disperse phase, and (4) filled graft rubber as the disperse phase. Adhesion mechanisms related to these systems are discussed. Special emphasis is made on the last two systems which involve grafting. The graft rubber isolated from the fourth system is characterized. The graft rubber is shown to function as a compatibilizer and as an adhesive or a coupling agent for the rubber-resin interface.

There are many coupling agents, compatibilizers, crosslinking agents and other dispersants described in the literature as experimental ones. They are not used industrially because of a number of reasons, mainly because of the lack of scale-up testing and the lack of hnancial considerations. Among them are, for example, iV-vinylformamide-grafted polypropylene [14] and poly(A-acryloyl dopamine [15].

PA/TPU blends have been compatibilized by addition of a bis-isocyanate coupling agent that is capable of reacting with nucleophilic end-groups on both polymers to form a block copolymer. Franke et al. [1993] have extruded PA-6 (20-0 parts) with polyester-urethane (78-100 parts) using a TSE at 230°C in the presence of 0.5-2 parts diphenylmethane dusocyanate. The coupling agent was added downstream of the extmder feed-throat. The blends were characterized by TEM, SEC, DSC, DMA, and FTIR. 

As shown in Table 5.49, PO/PP blends have been compatibilized by crosslinked copolymer formation mediated through addition of a tris-acrylate coupling agent and a radical initiator.
