Extraction and purification of proteins by employing RMs have been extensively studied using model systems (proteins from commercial suppliers) such as cytochrome C, ribonuclease, a-chymotrypsin, etc. However, very few reports are available on the extraction studies of proteins from the real systems of fermentation broths using RMs [ 15,43]. As we know that fermentation broths containing proteins are very much more complicated media compared to model proteins and mixture of model proteins, there is a need to investigate extraction behavior of proteins present in these real systems. 

Isolation and Structure Proof. The maytansinoids were (lie first ansamacrolides to be found in plants. The term maytansinoids refers to those ansamacrolides related to maytansinc, whereas the term maytansides refers to maytansinoids lacking the ester side chain at C-3 as well as the corresponding elimination products. Maytansine was first isolated from the alcoholic extract of Maytenus ovatus Loes. Several other maytansinoids and maytansides have been isolated from this species. The structure of niaytan-sine was established by x-ray crystallographic analysis, and the structures of the other maytansinoids and maytansides were arrived at by comparative nmr studies using maytansine. The absolute configuration of maytansine is 3(5), 4(5), 5(5), 6(R), 7(5), 10(5), and 2 (5).

In spite of the differences in the behavior of the pigments, in situ, as compared to extracts, studies on extracts provide useful information, not only on the structure of the bleaching intermediates, but also on the possible roles they may be playing in the photoreceptors. The bleaching intermediates from several species have been investigated extensively by using flash photolysis techniques and both low temperature and ultrafast kinetic spectroscopy. As an example, Fig. 5 shows the sequence of the intermediates in the photolysis of bovine and squid rhodopsin extracts. 

Since most of the studies concerning protein extraction with reverse micelles have used a representative surfactant, AOT and trioctyl methyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC), to form reverse micelles, the protein extraction studies using a novel surfactant shed light on the important factors in the design of reverse micelles suitable for protein extraction. In particular, a comparative investigation concerning protein extraction efficiency with a variety of synthetic surfactants clarified the role of the hydrophobic tails of the surfactant on protein extraction [9].
