A development of the last years is expected to serve more efficiently the need for clarification. Following the joint ISO-ILAC-IAF Communique of June 2005, a statement could be included on accreditation certificates. According to this statement, the accredited laboratory has demonstrated both its technical competence for the defined scope and the operation of a quality management system. 

This laboratory is accredited in accordance with the recognized International Standard ISO/IEC 170252005. Both the statement and the joint Communique were renewed in January 2009 to reflect the situation with the new version of ISO 9001 2008 (see following slides). 

Furthermore, the equivalence in the way both the laboratoiy accreditation standard and the certification standard deal with the management system requirements illustrates that an accredited laboratory meets, in practice, these requirements as specified in ISO 9001. After a proposal made via Eurachem and EA to ILAC, a similar joint Communique was agreed and signed in September 2009 by ILAC, lAF and ISO for medical laboratories against ISO 15189 2007.

The chemical industry can be one of the leaders of the sustainable post-industrial age if the following challenge issued from The Institution of Chemical Engineers, IChemE (Melbourne Communique, 2001) is met. 

In considering sustainability as a framework for the chemical engineering profession, the London Communique was an ad hoc step in the right direction. The 1997 London Communique (Fig. 4) acknowledged the need for chemical engineers to minimise their adverse impact on the environment more so than to use the profession s... 

This communique is a marvellous start in that it is a concerted effort by the leaders across the profession. It is a long way however from a code of practice. It is a statement of intent and an encouragement to the profession, but not a commitment. 

The London Communique, the efforts of IChemE through the Future Life report and the CRYSTAL Faraday Partnership, the commitment of AIChE to sustainability through the CWRT Industry Alliance, the efforts of individual companies such as Alcoa, are all positive steps but they may not be proactive enough. 

Practising chemical engineers must commit to the London Communique in order to retain their licence to operate. 

In 1997, the Institution of Chemical Engineers issued the London Communique, signed by 18 chemical engineering societies from around the world. The Communique designed this broader perspective for the chemical engineering profession...
