Commitment - meaning

Commitment means doing what you say, not saying what you do.

Top management commitment means that organizational quality cannot exist without the total commitment of the top executive team.

Customer supplied products that are issued for incorporation into supplies don t often require maintenance however, items for use in conjunction with the contract may be retained for such a duration that maintenance is necessary. If the products require any maintenance you should be provided with a maintenance specification and the appropriate equipment to do the job. Maintenance may include both preventive and corrective maintenance but you should clarify with your customer which it is. You may have the means for preventive maintenance, such as lubrication and calibration, but not for repairs. Always establish your obligations in the contract regarding customer supplied product, because you could take on commitments for which you are not contractually covered if something should go wrong. You need to establish who will supply the spares and re-certify the equipment following repair. 

Tangible support means not only resources but also standing relative to other company priorities. PSM needs legitimacy as a business objective to hold its own in situations requiring a trade-off between long-term process improvement and short-term commercial considerations. No matter how deeply committed safety professionals may be, this legitimacy can only be conferred by top management, who ultimately must make those trade-off decisions. 

A key consideration for many facility managers will be the cost (in dollars and in time) of their participation. To the extent possible, consider devising some means of providing subsidies, or otherwise sharing costs this will not only help overcome resistance but will also underscore the company s commitment to PSM. 

Even if no deficiencies exist, it is important to realise at the design stage that if a protective coating system is to be used as part or whole means of corrosion control, there must be a downstream commitment to inspection/ maintenance/renewal of the coating system, as appropriate to the particular operating life of the coating system.

The importance of completing the plant design, construction, and startup on time has been noted many times in the previous chapters. Every delay means a loss of money. This is true if for no other reason than that some of the money for design, construction, and startup has been spent, and the rest has been committed. Delays may also mean inability to meet sales commitments.
