In this comer design, if a mistake is made in the experiment at low levels of each factor, the estimation of all of the factor effects will be incorrect by the same amount. The fractional factorial design is generally considered to be superior to the comer design because of the averaging that takes place in calculating the factor effects in the fractional factorial design, an error in any one point will be distributed in smaller proportion over all factor effects. [Pg.337]

For this purpose a special probe was designed whose contour fits exactly to the actual turbine blade - it has to be positioned on the foot platform and around the comer of the blade, see figure 2. [Pg.760]

The varianee equation provides a valuable tool with whieh to draw sensitivity inferenees to give the eontribution of eaeh variable to the overall variability of the problem. Through its use, probabilistie methods provide a more effeetive way to determine key design parameters for an optimal solution (Comer and Kjerengtroen, 1996). From this and other information in Pareto Chart form, the designer ean quiekly foeus on the dominant variables. See Appendix XI for a worked example of sensitivity analysis in determining the varianee eontribution of eaeh of the design variables in a stress analysis problem. [Pg.152]

Cutting comers for a design saves pennies and costs big dollars over the years. [Pg.309]

Graphs such as Fig. 2.79 also give a convenient representation of the notch sensitivity of materials. For example it may be seen that sharp notches are clearly detrimental to all the materials tested and should be avoided in any good design. However, it is also apparent that the benefit derived from using generously rounded comers is much less for ABS than it is for materials such as nylon or PVC. [Pg.150]

Satisafactory compressor installations many times depend on how well the foundation or support structure was designed. An inadequate foundation design can result in equipment damage due to excessive vibration. The money saved by cutting comers on foundation design effort may be spent many times in costs associated with high maintenance and lost production. [Pg.319]

The presence of stress raisers, including sharp comers and imperfect welds, produces locally high stress levels. These should be avoided where possible or taken into account when designing the materials for use in environments in which they are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking or corrosion fatigue. [Pg.904]

Apart from giving you tips for the design and delivery of your mentoring training, we hope that this chapter - and the case studies presented in Chapter 3 - have convinced you of the importance of training for mentors, mentees, and relevant third parties. If you must cut any comers in the implementation of your scheme, then don t do it here - far too much is at stake. [Pg.290]

In this case, there are three equivalent hybrid orbitals, each called sp (trigonal hybridization). This method of designating hybrid orbitals is perhaps unfortunate since nonhybrid orbitals are designated by single letters, but it must be kept in mind that each of the three orbitals is called sp. These orbitals are shown in Figure 1.4. The three axes are all in one plane and point to the comers of an equilateral triangle. This accords with the known structure of boron trifluoride (BF3), a planar molecule with angles of 120°. [Pg.7]

For the sake of developing commercial reactors with high performance for direct synthesis of DME process, a novel circulating slurry bed reactor was developed. The reactor consists of a riser, down-comer, gas-liquid separator, gas distributor and specially designed internals for mass transfer and heat removal intensification [3], Due to density difference between the riser and down-comer, the slurry phase is eirculated in the reactor. A fairly good flow structure can be obtained and the heat and mass transfer can be intensified even at a relatively low superficial gas velocity. [Pg.490]

A two levels of full factorial experimental design with three independent variables were generated with one center point, which was repeated[3]. In this design, F/P molar ratio, Oh/P wt%, and reaction temperature were defined as independent variables, all receiving two values, a high and a low value. A cube like model was formed, with eight comers. One center point (repeated twice) was added to improve accuracy of the design. Every analysis results were treated as a dependent result in the statistical study. [Pg.869]
