Collip

Except for a veiled but important reference in Banting s 1922 account, there are no other useful written records of this incident. Clark Noble once drew a cartoon, unfortunately now lost, of Banting sitting on Collip, choking him he captioned it The Discovery of Insulin . [Pg.253]

In 1925 Banting and Macleod were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Banting shared his award with Best and Macleod shared his with Collip. (See also page 253.)... [Pg.265]

Toxicity problems (due to impurities) associated with prolonged repeat insulin administration soon put this treatment in jeopardy. However, a biochemist, James Collip, devised an improved purification scheme entailing insulin crystalUzation, which overcame such toxicity. [Pg.305]

The work culminated in Banting and John MacLeod (his Professor) receiving the Nobel prize, although many felt that the contribution of Best and Collip also deserved Nobel recognition. [Pg.305]

Taking precautions to prevent proteolysis, Banting and Best (later aided by biochemist J. B. Collip) succeeded in December 1921 in preparing a purified pancreatic extract that cured the symptoms of experimental diabetes in dogs. On January 25,1922 (just one month later ), their insulin preparation was injected into Leonard Thompson, a 14-year-old boy severely ill with diabetes mellitus. Within days, the levels of ketone bodies and glucose in Thompson s urine dropped dramatically the extract saved his life. In 1923, Banting and MacLeod won the Nobel Prize for their isolation of insulin. Banting immediately announced that he would share his prize with Best MacLeod shared his with Collip. [Pg.883]

My interest in the influence of diet on hormone-dependent cancers was first stimulated about 20 years ago by studies carried out in collaboration with colleagues at the Collip Medical Research Laboratory of the University of Western Ontario. They were involved in studies on the role of hormones in mammary cancer and for this purpose were inducing tumors in rats with 7,12-dimethylbenz(oi)-anthracene (DMBA) as described by Huggins et al ( 1). They were concerned to know whether hormonal treatment might affect tumorigenesis by altering the degree and time of exposure of mammary... [Pg.181]

For a long time very little progress was made with the purification and isolation of the parathyroid hormone the acid extraction procedure of Collip (Cll) provided the standard commercial extract for over 30 years. [Pg.276]
