In the case of palladium particles supported on magnesium oxide, Heiz and his colleagues have shown,29 in an elegant study, a correlation between the number of palladium atoms in a cluster and the selectivity for the conversion of acetylene to benzene, butadiene and butane, whereas in the industrially significant area of catalytic hydrodesulfurisation, the Aarhus group,33 with support from theory, have pinpointed by STM metallic edge states as the active sites in the MoS2 catalysts.

Some clients won t understand words like anal intercourse, vagina, semen, cunnilingus, and will feel alienated and resentful if the counsellor talks like that. Anyone who doesn t feel able to use street language like fuck, cock, cum, suck, etc., will need support from colleagues—and that shouldn t be judged either. 

Dr. Walter Alvarez recently told me that when he wrote a paper on food allergies at the Mayo Clinic about fifty years ago, he was severely criticized by his colleagues. Only strong support from one of the Mayos, who discovered that he himself had a food allergy, protected Alvarez from even-more-powerful assault. Medicine seems very reluctant to take unto itself new diseases.

Nye then turns to Polanyi s brilliant work on the X-ray diffraction of polymers and solids in general. In this field he was more successful, although some of his ideas were also developed independently by other scientists. Polanyi s main problem in this area was lack of support from his colleagues in Berlin. This was partly because his ideas were too advanced for the 1920s, but also reflects Polanyi s inability (or at least unwillingness) to follow the current trends.
