Epoxy/reinforced can be used for molds for open (contact), and low-pressure cold-press molding. Epoxy molds have poor temperature control and tend to be fragile. Compoimding with a metal filling improves heat conductivity but, in general, epoxy molds should only be used for short runs or for prototype parts, when quality is not the key criterion, but cost and flexibility are paramount. [Pg.425]

Although runners should deliver melt to each cavity at the same time, they may be naturally balanced or artificially balanced. In naturally balanced runners the distance from sprue to all gates is the same, whereas artificially balanced runners have the same pressure drop from sprue to all gates. Cold runner molds also incorporate cold slug wells at each turn in the melt flow. Use of an injection molding machine is the most common method for thermoplastic material. PE or other polymer samples are preheated in a cylindrical chamber to a temperature at which it will flow and then is forced into a relatively cold, closed mold cavity by means of quite high pressure applied hydraulically through a ram or screw type plunger. The screw is moved forward to force a fixed volume of the molten polymer into the closed mold, where the polyethylene is soHdified. Finally, the screw rotates and moves backward to charge the polymer for the next cycle. [Pg.282]

More complex shapes can be made by cold isostatic pressing (CIP). CIP uses deformable mbber molds of the required shape to contain the powder. The appHcation of isostatic pressure to the mold suspended in a pressure transfer media, such as oil, compacts the powder. CIP is not as easily automated as uniaxial pressing, but has found wide appHcation in the preparation of more complex shapes such as spark plug insulators (26). [Pg.311]
