Cockroaches plasticity

The organophosphoms ester dichlorvos is sufficiently volatile to be incorporated either in permeable plastic bottles or plastic strips which permit its controlled release for fumigation of cupboards and closets to control cockroaches, or as flea collars on pets. [Pg.299]

Cellular plasticity of pheromone glands. Reproduction in female cockroaches depends on the timely acquisition and processing of resources that are then provisioned to many synchronously maturing oocytes. As virgin females advance... [Pg.311]

Red phosphorus (RP) is a component of matchbox strike plates and is used as an ingredient in certain commercial rat and cockroach poisons. RP is used in the manufacture of pyrotechnics, semiconductors, fertilizers, incendiary shells, smoke bombs (in combination with butyl rubber), and tracer bullets. It is also used in organic synthesis reactions and in the manufacture of phosphoric acid, phosphine, phosphoric anhydride, phosphorus pentachloride, phosphorus trichloride, and in electroluminescent coatings. RP (2-10%) is also used as a flame-retardant additive for plastics such as polyamides. [Pg.2208]

The Federal Animal Welfare Act (PL 89-544) requires that animal food be stored in facilities which protect it from infestation or contamination by vermin (wild rodents, birds, and insects). Food can be stored in individual animal rooms in vermin-proof containers with lids, such as plastic garbage containers. Ideally, bulk-food shipments should be stored in a room or warehouse where the temperature can be maintained at less than 70"F and the relative humidity at 50% or less. The room should have doors that prevent the entry of rodents or birds. Vermin control is important since wild rodents, birds, and insects can contaminate stored feed with bacteria, viruses, or parasites which could adversely affect laboratory animal health. Pesticides should not be used to control vermin in this area while food supplies are present contamination of food with pesticides can seriously affect experimental results in animals. Boric acid powder can be placed along the walls to control cockroaches, without the negative experimental impact of organophosphate insecticides. [Pg.278]

Repellency of terpenoids was evaluated with German cockroaches in choice tests, using pairs of plastic boxes (9 X 8.5 X 2cm) connected by plastic tubing. Treated filter paper was placed in one box, and a control (acetone treated) filter paper was put in the other box (4). Hedgeapple, bay leaves, and spearmint chewing gum were tested using the weight of products (in pg) per unit of volume of the box (in cm ) for determination of exposure concentrations (1 fjg/cnr = 1 ppm). [Pg.306]
