Coatings, complex mixture analysis

Complex Mixture Analysis. High-performance organic coatings are extremely complex formulations. Specifically, waterborne automo-... [Pg.51]

Applications. The capabiHties of a gc/k/ms in separating and identifying components in complex mixtures is very high for a broad spectmm of analytical problems. One area where k information particularly complements ms data is in the differentiation of isomeric compounds. An example is in the analysis of tricresyl phosphates (TCPs) used as additives in a variety of products because of thek lubricating and antiwear characteristics (see Lubrication and lubricants). One important use of TCPs is in hydrauHc fluid where they tenaciously coat metal surfaces thereby reducing friction and wear. Tricresyl phosphate [1330-78-5] (7.2 21 exists in a variety of isomeric forms and the commercial product is a complex mixture of these isomers. [Pg.402]

The complex mixtures of methylated alditol acetates, often obtained after methylation analysis, cannot be adequately resolved on conventional packed GLC columns. The fractionation of large numbers of these derivatives now can be achieved using capillary columns (Geyer et al., 1982). It is unlikely that a single column can adequately resolve all the derivatives from the methylation analysis of plant cell walls (Lomax et al., 1985). A combination of different liquid phases and coating procedures, namely wall-coated (WCOT), support-coated (SCOT), and permanently bonded (BP) phases will be required (Geyer et al., 1982 Lomax et al., 1985). As an alternative to PMAA, partially ethylated alditol acetates may be used... [Pg.93]

High-resolution analysis of the entire suite of C2-C12 NMHCs by conventional one-dimensional gas chromatography is typically performed with various siloxane-coated fused-silica capillaries or PLOT columns. Designing a single GC analysis which will adequately separate the entire complex mixture is very difficult to achieve, because ethene, acetylene, and ethane are difficult to separate, even with a 100 m siloxane-coated column. Furthermore, separations with a column of this length take approximately 70 min. The PLOT columns can completely resolve the C2-C3 NMHCs, but resolution of the Cg-Ci2 NMHCs is poor. If the sample is analyzed separately in a 60 m siloxane column, mounted in one GC and a PLOT column mounted in another, the analyses can be completed in approximately 45 min. The preconcentrated sample is transferred to a 60 m X 0.32 mm i.d. fused-silica capillary column coated with a 1 /rm-thick film of poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a 30 m X 0.53 mm i.d., PLOT column coated with alumina to resolve the C4-C12 and C2-C3 NMHCs, respectively. The oven temperature for the PDMS column is held at — 50°C for 2 min, then increased to 210°C at 8°Cmin and thereafter to 250°C at... [Pg.628]

A electronic nose based on an array of eight quartz microbalance-based (QCM) sensors coated with modified MPPs (5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin) was used for apple aroma measurements [13], The response of each QCM sensor was modeled with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) adsorption isotherms. By means of multivariate analysis on all sensor responses, the different compounds could be discriminated well and quantified accurately. This calibration protocol can be used to characterize the sensors for the vapors of complex mixtures. [Pg.87]

Modern coating materials are complex mixtures of binders, solvents, pigments, extenders, and additives. Most of these components consist of several constituents. Complete analysis of coating materials therefore requires comprehensive knowledge and the use of various analytical methods. [Pg.235]

In the past decade or so, extensive work by Diamond and co-workers [312-317] has shown that exposed outdoor surfaces in urban areas rapidly become coated with a complex mixture of chemical compounds ( urban sxuface film ), most readily encountered as window grime. This film grows via accretion from the atmosphere and is removed by rain wash-off, or revolatilization processes, yielding an (estimated) steady-state thickness of several tens to hundreds of nanometers. Chemical analysis of these films has been carried out both in a broad brush approach [312, 313], which identified the compound classes present, and by more detailed studies [315-317] that determined the specific compounds within these classes. [Pg.37]

Despite the number of sheathless CE-ESI interfaces described, few have been used for the analysis of complex carbohydrate mixtures. Zamfir et al. described a sheathless on-line CE/ESI-MS interface consisting of a CE capillary with the terminus shaped into a copper-coated microsprayer.134,135 This was described as... [Pg.101]
