To study atmospheric corrosion, different types of structural steels were used both in uncoated and coated conditions. Some steels provide excellent corrosion protection against certain atmospheric conditions in uncoated state, but most steels are coated with paints to serve the same purpose. High performance organic coatings were used for barrier protection. 

Potassium ionisation of desorbed species (K IDS) with mass spectrometric detection is an extremely useful tool for the characterisation of high performance organic coatings. K IDS uses a commercial rapid heating probe to desorb intact molecules which are then ionised by potassium cation attachment. Based upon the molecular ions, which appear as [M]K, coatings components can be qualitatively and quantitatively analysed. In this work K IDS was selected as a method of soft ionisation, (i.e., producing molecular ions) because of its simplicity, wide applicability, low cost and compatibility with the quadrupole mass spectrometer. Simonsick [76] reports the application of K IDS to polymer additives (UV stabilisers and antioxidants), catalysts (organotin), reactive diluents (vernonia oil and aliphatic epoxides) and polyurethane precursors (polyesters and isocyanates). Tikuisis and co-workers [77] also discussed this technique. 

Paints, coatings, and high-performance organic coatings were developed to protect equipment from environmental damage. Of prime importance in the development of protective coatings was the petroleum industry.

Three kinds of PAV films was prepared using methoxy pendant precursors. The chemical structures and synthetic route of the PAV films used in this study are shown in Fig. 19. The details of synthesis of the methoxy pendant precursors have been described in refs. 29 and 30. The precursors were soluble in conventional organic solvents, for example, chloroform, dichloromethane, benzene and so on. The precursor polymer thin films were spin-coated on fused quartz substrates from the chloroform solutions. The precursor films were converted to PAV films by the heat-treatment at 250 0 under a nitrogen flow with a slight amount of HC1 as a catalyst. This method provided high performance PAV films with excellent optical quality.
