Unsaturated polyester resin powders can provide a colored and finished exterior molded surface or a finish ready for painting. Normally, a primer/sealer must be appHed to molded articles prior to painting. In addition to the unsaturated polyester resin, multifimctional unsaturated monomers such as triaHyl cyanurate (TAC) [101-37-1] or diaHyl phthalate (DAP) [131-17-9] suitable peroxide initiators (qv) or mixtures thereof, and mold release agents (qv) are used to formulate the coating powder (46). 

The only components in a coating powder which might cause the waste to be classified as hazardous are certain heavy-metal pigments sometimes used as colorants. Lead- (qv) and cadmium-based pigments (qv) are seldom used, however, and other potentially hazardous elements such as barium, nickel, and chromium are usually in the form of highly insoluble materials that seldom cause of the spent powder to be characterized as a hazardous waste (86). 

Traditionally, many powder color coatings are applied as suspensions in organic liquids. Anything from small parts, such as toys, to large items, such as automobile... 

The typical constituents of a coating powder are binders (resins, if necessary hardeners and accelerators), colorants (mainly pigments), additives, and in some cases extenders. 

The building and construction industry is the main user of coating powders, for both exterior and interior use. Coating powders have proved popular for coloring light metal facades, panels, and profiles on account of their outstanding weather resistance and robust surface. They also allow architects complete freedom of expression and use. New systems with extrem weatherability are introduced to the market. 

The vast majority of thermosetting coating powders are prepared by melt muting. Some thermoplastic powders are also produced by this method but most are manufactured by the dry-blend process as shown in Figure 1. Production methods based on spray drying from solution (86) and precipitation from solution (87) have been evaluated but never achieved commercial success because of difficulties in solvent and/or water removal from the powders. Many types of coating powders are still manufactured in small batches, eg, 50-1500 kg, due to differences in color or chemistry, where chemical processes are not economical. 

Most physical properties of a particulate system are ensembles or statistical values of the properties from their individual constituents. Commonly evaluated particle geometrical properties are counts, dimension (size and distribution), shape (or conformation), and surface features (specific area, charge and distribution, porosity and distribution). Of these properties, characterization of particle size and surface features is of key interest. The behavior of a particulate system and many of its physical parameters are highly size-dependent. For example, the viscosity, flow characteristics, filterability of suspensions, reaction rate and chemical activity of a particulate system, the stability of emulsions and suspensions, abrasiveness of dry powders, color and finish of colloidal paints and paper coatings, strength of ceramics, are all dependent on particle size distribution. Opacifiers are fine inorganic powders, usually white, that are used to reduce the transparency of ceramic gla2es and porcelain enamels. The coating becomes opaque because the particles of the opacifter scatter and reflect the incident light. When inorganic pigments are combined with white opacifiers, pastel colors are obtained.
