Like thiamine, riboflavin is also used for the fortification of certain foods, such as wheat flour and breakfast cereals. Because of its yellow-orange colour, it is also used as a colouring for certain foods, especially cereal products, ice creams and sugar-coated pills. Hydroxyl groups of ribitol can be easily esterified by carboxylic acids. For example, riboflavin-2, 3, 4 5 -tetrabutyrate has been used as an antioxidant. 

The disintegration time can be modified for a rapid effect or for sustained release. Special coatings can make the tablet resistant to the stomach acids such that it only disintegrates in the duodenum, jejimum and colon as a result of enzyme action or alkaline pH. Pills can be coated with sugar, varnish or wax according to the desired taste [40]. 

With a PAT system, the line is continuously monitored1 and every pill is examined. The production line can then be halted and corrected immediately should the coating process require more sugar or the press pressure require adjustment.

Pepaine and Iron Pills. Mix together 2 drachms 34 grains starchy pepaine, and half that weight of iodide of iron in c stals, with sufficient syrup to make 100 pills. Cover them with 24 d hms reduced iron, and finish with sugar-coating.
