Zein is used as a tablet binder in wet-granulation processes or as a tablet-coating agent mainly as a replacement for shellac. It is used primarily as an enteric-coating agent or in extended-release oral tablet formulations. Zein is also used in food applications as a coating agent. See Table I. [Pg.828]

Tablets may be formulated with coatings such as shellac, resin, or styrene-maleic acid copolymer. These coatings are insoluble in acid but dissolve readily at neutral or alkaline pH. Thus they are ideally suited to prevent drug release until the formulation has passed from the stomach into the small intestine. Preventing drug release in the stomach may protect drugs that are acid labile. It may also protect the patient from irritant substances like iron salts, diethylstilbo-estrol, and some anti-inflammatory agents. Release, and subsequent systemic availability of drugs from these formulations is likely to be highly sensitive to stomach emptying patterns. Bland in taste and of a characteristic odor, the preparations for application are dissolved in ethanol/ water or acetone/water mixtures. They form films, a property used in protective food coatings. Z. is used also as a wet granulation binder, as an remote release agent and for the manufacture of adhesives as well as a substitute for - shellac, for the production of laminated boards and in solid color printing. [Pg.328]
