Freshwater with less than 500 ppm (or 0.05%) dissolved soHds is generally considered to be potable. Rain is the source of freshwater, and its precipitation of >1.3 x 10 m /d over the earth s surface averages about 1.05 m (depth) per year. Extremes range from almost 2ero ia North Chile s desert borderiag the Pacific Coast to > 25.4 m ia some tropical forests and on some high slopes where the high, cold mountains condense floods from the clouds.

The South and North were the two largest timber-related secondary products manufacturing regions, adding 16,350 million (41%) and 15,549 million (30%) of value, respectively, in 1991 (Table 10). The Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast regions combined added the remaining 20%. 

Wave size is determined by wind speed and fetch, the distance over the oceans surface which the wind travels. Favorable wind energy sites are generally western coastlines facing the open ocean such as the Pacific Coast of North America and the Atlantic Coast of Northern Europe. Norway, Denmark, Japan, and the United Kingdom are the world leaders in wave energy technologies.

Second, there has been another severe outbreak of paralytic shellfish poisoning along the Pacific coast of Central America, with veiy high levels of shellHsh toxicity detected in Guatemala. There have, however, been no deaths and very few illnesses reported there, due to a timely response based on information gained from detailed investigations of the first outbreak. This time they were ready. 

Excellent general information on amphitropical relationships involving taxa from the Pacific Coast of North America and South America appears in a symposium on the subject published in the 1963 Quarterly Review of Biology (Raven, 1963) with contributions from Lincoln Constance on Apiaceae, Larry Heckard on Hydrophyllaceae, Kenton Chambers and Robert Omduff on genera in Asteraceae, and Peter Raven on an overview of floristic relationships between North America and South America.
