Light oil syn. coal tar distillates, coal tar solvents, or coal tar oil. a highly flammable mixture of toluene, xylene, cumenes, etc. [Pg.45]

Coal tar naphtha (71-43-2) is an indefinite term generally applied to the flammable coal tar distillates extracted at around 160 to 220°C. The term naphtha, however, is mostly applicable to petroleum products. Cresol (1319-77-3) is a mixture of methyl phenyl isomers extracted from the middle- to heavy-oil fractions (it is also derived from petroleum). Cresol is a toxic irritant and corrosive to skin and mucous membranes, which explains its common use as a disinfectant. [Pg.45]

Benzene, is an aromatie hydrocarbon and historically has been produced during the process of coal tar distillation and coke production, while today benzene is produced mainly by the petrochemical industry. Based on the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in the United States, it has been estimated that in 1976 two million Americans were exposed occupationally to benzene. Worldwide production of benzene is approximately 15 million tons and the production in the United States is estimated to be increasing at least 3% annually, approaching 6 million tons of benzene produced in the United States in 1990 and 6.36 million tons produced in 1993. Benzene has been described as a clear, colorless, non-corrosive, and flammable liquid with a strong odor. [Pg.1363]

Toluene (Figure 3.2a) is the principle intoxicant in many inhaled products and is one of the most frequently abused chemicals. Its chemical formula is C Hg, and it is a colorless, flammable liquid with a sweet, pungent odor. It occurs naturally in the tolu tree, in crude oil fuels, and from the distillation of coal tar. Toluene is used to boost the amount of octane in... [Pg.30]

COAL TAR NAPHTHA or COAL TAR OIL, HEAVY DISTILLATE (8030-30-6) Highly flammable liquid. Forms explosive mixture with air [explosion limits in air (vol %) 1.0 to uel unknown flash point 100 to 107°F/37 to 42°C Fire Rating 2]. Violent reaction with strong oxidizers concentrated nitric acid. Incompatible with strong acids, nitrates. May attack some plastics, mbber, and coatings. On small fires, use dry chemical powder (such as Purple-K-Powder), foam, or CO2 extinguishers. COAL TAR OIL or COAL TAR, BROWN or COAL TAR EXTRACT or COAL TAR OINTMENT (8007-45-2 69912-81-8 91722-33-7 101316-83-0) see tar, liquid. [Pg.275]
