Precise placement of metal complexing sites within the infrastructure of a cascade molecule is of importance from a variety of perspectives. In the construction of the above noted Micellane family (cf. Sect. 3.1), we reported the construction of dendrimers with four alkyne moieties at sites equidistant from each other in the interior (17, Fig. 8) [60]. These were treated with decaborane (B10H14) to afford 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaboranes (o-carboranes) [71]. Rendering boron clusters soluble in water is of interest because of their use in cancer treatment by Boron Neutron Cancer Therapy. First and second generation water-soluble dendrimers containing four and twelve precisely located boron cluster sites, respectively, were synthesized (e.g., 18). These water soluble dendrimers and their precursors were characterized by 13C-, and nB-NMR spectroscopy (Fig. 8). [Pg.41]

Osazone formation. Forms a yellow osazone, m.p. 208° soluble in hot water. See p. 137 for preparation. More recendy, molecular molybdenum-sulfur complexes and clusters have been used as soluble precursors for M0S2 in the formulation of lubricating oils for a variety of appHcations (70). Presumably, the oil-soluble molybdenum—sulfur-containing precursors decompose under shear, pressure, or temperature stress at the wear surface to give beneficial coatings. In several cases it has been shown that the soluble precursors are trifunctional in that they not only display antifriction properties, but have antiwear and antioxidant characteristics as weU. The third control is by use of a fixed burnable poison. This consists of rods containing a mixture of aluminum oxide and boron carbide, included in the initial fuel loading using the vacant spaces in some of the fuel assembhes that do not have control clusters. The burnable poison is consumed during operation, causing a reactivity increase that helps counteract the drop owing to fuel consumption. It also reduces the need for excessive initial soluble boron. Tungsten pentachlofide [13470-13-8], WCl, mp 243°C, bp 275.6°C, is a black, crystalline, deHquescent soHd. It is only slightly soluble in carbon disulfide and decomposes in water to the blue oxide, 200 2. Magnetic properties suggest that tungsten pentachlofide may contain trinuclear clusters in the soHd state, but this stmcture has not been defined.
