Cross-tolerance A condition where an individual who is tolerant to the pharmacological effects of one member of a drug family also shows tolerance to other members of that family. Cross-dependence allows drug substitution during detoxification (e.g., methadone for heroin or clomethiazole for ethanol), so reducing the severity and potential danger of withdrawal symptoms. 

Buspar containing buspirone is indicated in short-term anxiety. Diazepam, Stilnoct containing zolpidem, Heminevrin containing clomethiazole, and Phenergan containing promethazine are all indicated in insomnia. 

The withdrawal syndrome from ethanol includes anxiety, insomnia, possibly convulsions and visual hallucinations (delirium tremens - the Dts). It is treated or better still prevented by a calm environment, adequate (but not excessive) hydration, and careful monitoring, with the added use of anticon-vulsive/sedative agents, mainly benzodiazepines to prevent or treat convulsions. The preventive effects of benzodiazepines on withdrawal morbidity has been clearly demonstrated. There do not seem to be major differences between benzodiazepines, such as chlordiazepoxide or diazepam or others. Because of the abuse potential in these highly susceptible patients, these should be rapidly weaned, and proper prevention of relapse instituted. This drug has sedative and anticonvulsant properties. Its use in anaesthesia is now almost exclusively reserved for the management of acute withdrawal syndromes in the intensive care unit. It is thought that clomethiazole enhances GABAergic transmission in the brain. At normal dosages it has little effect on the cardiovascular system. 

Clomethiazole has an elimination half-life of about 4 hours after a single bolus. When administered by intravenous infusion half-lives approaching 20 hours have been reported. Clomethiazole can also be effective for controlling status epilepticus but is used mainly to treat agitated states, especially alcoholic delirium tremens and associated seizures.
