Climatological conditions

Another classification of model is related to the time and space scales of interest. Ambient air quality standards are stated for measurement averaging periods varying from an hour to a year. However, for computational purposes, it is often necessary to use periods of less than an hour for a typical resolution-cell size in a model. Spatial scales of interest vary from a few tenths of a meter (e.g., for the area immediately adjacent to a roadway) up to hundreds of kilometers (e.g., in simulations that will elucidate urban-rural interactions). Large spatial scales are also warranted when multiday simulations are necessary for even a moderate-sized urban area. Under some climatologic conditions, recirculations can cause interaction of today s pollution with tomorrow s. Typical resolution specifications couple spatial scales with temporal sc es. Therefore, the full matrix of time scales and space scales is not needed, because of the dependence of time scales on space scales. Some typical categories by scale are as follows ... 

Western United States (WUS). Less is known about deposition conditions in the West. However, data are becoming available from which a picture of exposure can be deduced. Of particular interest is a comparison between eastern and western deposition because of differences in their chemical climatological conditions. Examples of such differences are listed in Table I.

The mesophiles A. thiooxidans and A. ferrooxidans have been found in equal proportions in mine effluents regardless of geological and climatological conditions. The temperature optimum for A. ferrooxidans and A. thiooxidans lies between 15 °C and 35 °C. Both are acidophiles and can tolerate a pH range of 1.5-6.0, with optimum growth between pH 2.0 and 2.5. The limitations for evaporation lagoons include local health ordinances potential for odors and health hazard when not properly designed land area requirements dependence on meteorological and climatological conditions. Sludge lagoons may require provisions to add makeup water to maintain a miiumum depth during dry, hot seasons. Finally, public access restrictions are necessary.

The hazard to the plant presented by such facilities are site specific and, in all but special cases, can be expected to be enveloped by those produced by the climatological conditions assumed for the design of the Standard MHTGR (see Section 2.4). 

Residual soils are those formed by rocks located just below them. Climatologic conditions (temperature and rainfall) were the main reasons of disintegration of the parent materials. Those soil types consist of inorganic grainy materials, in the form of fine particles in upper layers and in the form of more coarse particles in lower layers. These soils can be used as pavement foundation layer, provided that no drastic chemical disintegration has occurred (tropical climatologic conditions). 

Climatological conditions (including wind speed, wind direction, stability of the mixing layer of the atmosphere, precipitation statistics, temperature and humidity) should be monitored, both in the pre-operational studies and during operation of the facility.
