In commercial practice, powdered explosives on an ammonium nitrate basis are used in most cases. Typical detonation velocities are between 1800 and 3500 m/s depending on the metal system to be bonded. The lower detonation velocity range is preferred for many metal systems in order to minimize the quantity of solidified melt associated with the bond-zone waves (12). In addition, subsonic detonation velocity explosives are required for the parallel cladding technique in order to avoid attached shock waves in the coUision region, which preclude formation of a good bond. [Pg.148]

In order to hide the aluminum extrusions, rubber strips and screws (dress-caps) were fitted over the top of the pressure plates. They were also aluminum extrusions with L-shaped cross-sections. For aesthetic reasons, the original building design required the dress-caps to be externally clad with thin copper sheet. The fuel consists of a series of UN pellets that are total of 52 cm in length and 0.91 cm in diameter. These are capped by 5 cm of BeO to act as an axial reflector. There is a gas plenum on the top of the pin to allow for fission product gas build up. A layer of rhenium acts as a liner for the fuel pin to prevent interaction between the NblZr cladding and the UN pellets and also acts as a thermal neutron absorber in accident cases as discussed later.
