Chromophoric assembly solution

Advincula, R., et al.. Photo-induced alignment of polymer ultrathin films fabricated by alternate self-assembly solution adsorption of polyelectrolytes and small azo dye chromophores. ACS Polymer Preprints, 1999. Spring p. 1-2. [Pg.442]

Self-assembly of functionalized carboxylate-core dendrons around Er +, Tb +, or Eu + ions leads to the formation of dendrimers [19]. Experiments carried out in toluene solution showed that UV excitation of the chromophoric groups contained in the branches caused the sensitized emission of the lanthanide ion, presumably by an energy transfer Forster mechanism. The much lower sensitization effect found for Eu + compared with Tb + was ascribed to a weaker spectral overlap, but it could be related to the fact that Eu + can quench the donor excited state by electron transfer [20]. [Pg.164]

Electrostatic self-assembly was combined with supramolecular chemistry to obtain inclusion complexes of a polymeric nonlinear optical (NLO) active dye and modified [3-cyclodextrin with induced chromophore orientation [37], The polyanion is a N,N-diallyl-aniline and sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate copolymer functionalized with pendant azo group. The modified /i-cyclodextrin oligo-cation was obtained by treatment of hcptakis(6-dco y-6-iodo-/i-cyclodcxtrin) with excess pyridine. A linear polyamine, chitosan, was also combined with the polyanion, for comparison. Films were deposited on glass slides by dipping them alternatively in aqueous solutions of the cation and the polyanion. UV-visible spectra indicate dye aggregation and suggest the formation of an inclusion complex of the dye with the cyclodextrin, thus isolating the chromophores. [Pg.210]

In an impressive demonstration of self-assembly, Lehn and co-workers showed that 32 (Figure 6.16) reacts with an equimolar amount of ferric chloride in ethylene glycol at 170 °C to yield the red solution expected for the presence of an iron(Il) tris-bipyridyl chromophore. Molecular models indicated that the three bipyridyl fragments of each ligand are best accommodated by co-ordination to three differ-... [Pg.142]

Monodisperse oligo(phenylenevinylene)s are assembled to three-dimensional scaffolds in convergent three- or fourfold Homer reactions of a silane core and stilbenoid aldehydes in moderate to good yields. The central silane is sensitive toward nucleophilic attack. Tetrahedral compounds with short side chains form stable amorphous films but trigonal-pyramidal shaped assemblies tend to recrystallize. The connection of the chromophores to a central silicon atom results in a stabilization of the excited states an intense blue-green fluorescence is emitted from solution as well as from transparent films. [Pg.537]
