There are several examples of well-characterized tri- and tetranu-clear hydroxo-bridged complexes of chromium(III) and cobalt(III). Penta- and hexanuclear aqua chromium(III) complexes have been prepared in solution, but their structure and properties are unknown. Oligomers of nuclearity higher than four have not been reported for cobalt(IIl), with the exception of some hetero-bridged heteronuclear species (193, 194). There appear to be no reports of rhodium(III) or iridium(III) complexes of nuclearity higher than two. [Pg.81]

Two of the Gd isotopes, namely, d and Gd, have excellent neutron-capture characteristics but are present in nature in only low concentrations. As a result, Gd has a very fast burnout rate and has limited use as nuclear control rod material in reactors and power plants [2]. Compounds of gadolinium are used in making phosphors for color TV tubes. The metal has superconductive properties. As little as 1% of the element has been found to improve the workability and resistance of iron, chromium, and related alloys to high temperatures and oxidation. In general, the solid solution austenitic phase (y) with high chromium content (12 % - 20 %) is responsible about the excellent corrosion performance of austenitic alloys. This advantage allows these alloys to use in biomedical, food and chemical, pulp and paper chemical, petrochemical, heat exchange and nuclear power plant industries [1-4], However, most of these applications are suffering from their relatively low hardness and poor tribological properties. [Pg.339]
