Passing back to the boron group, if it is desired to form anhydrous chloride, it is necessary either to heat the element, or its oxide mixed with charcoal, in a current of chlorine, or, except in the case of boron, to prepare a double salt of the chloride with ammonium chloride, and to volatilise the latter after driving off the water the aqueous chlorides are formed by dissolving the oxides or hydroxides in hydrochloric acid. Thallium forms monohalides, sparingly soluble in cold water, and thereby attaches itself to the copper group. [Pg.61]

Zeolites have also proven applicable for removal of nitrogen oxides (NO ) from wet nitric acid plant tail gas (59) by the UOP PURASIV N process (54). The removal of NO from flue gases can also be accomplished by adsorption. The Unitaka process utilizes activated carbon with a catalyst for reaction of NOy with ammonia, and activated carbon has been used to convert NO to N02, which is removed by scrubbing (58). Mercury is another pollutant that can be removed and recovered by TSA. Activated carbon impregnated with elemental sulfur is effective for removing Hg vapor from air and other gas streams the Hg can be recovered by ex situ thermal oxidation in a retort (60). The UOP PURASIV Hg process recovers Hg from chlor-alkali plant vent streams using more conventional TSA regeneration (54). Mordenite and clinoptilolite zeolites are used to remove HC1 from Cl, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and reformer catalyst gas streams (61). Activated aluminas are also used for such applications, and for the adsorption of fluorine and boron—fluorine compounds from alkylation (qv) processes (50). [Pg.281]

Davy, Sir Humphry (i778-i829) British chemist, who studied gases at the Pneumatic Institute in Bristol, where he discovered the anaesthetic properties of dinitrogen oxide (nitrous oxide). He moved to the Royal Institution, London, in 1801 and five years later isolated potassium and sodium by electrolysis. He also prepared barium, boron, calcium, and strontium as well as proving that chlorine and iodine are elements. In 1816 he invented the Davy lamp. [Pg.222]

Iron and manganese occur in a number of soil minerals. Sodium and chlorine (as chloride) occur naturally in soil and are transported as atmospheric particulate matter from marine sprays (see Chapter 10). Some of the other micronutrients and trace elements are found in primary (unweathered) minerals that occur in soil. Boron is substituted isomorphically for Si in some micas and is present in tourmaline, a mineral with the formula NaMg3AlgB3Sig027(0H,F)4. Copper is isomorphically substituted for other elements in feldspars, amphiboles, olivines, p5Toxenes, and micas it also occurs as trace levels of copper sulfides in silicate minerals. Molybdenum occurs as molybdenite (M0S2). Vanadium is isomorphically substituted for Fe or A1 in oxides, pyroxenes, amphiboles, and micas. Zinc is present as the result of isomorphic substitution for Mg, Fe, and Mn in oxides, amphiboles, olivines, and pyroxenes and as trace zinc sulfide in silicates. Other trace elements that occur as specific minerals, sulfide inclusions, or by isomorphic substitution for other elements in minerals are chromium, cobalt, arsenic, selenium, nickel, lead, and cadmium. [Pg.557]
