A simplified version of the model in Table IX, neglecting accumulation of mass and heat as well as dispersion and conduction in the gas phase, predicts dynamic performance of a laboratory S02 converter operating under periodic reversal of flow direction quite well. This is shown by Fig. 13 taken from Wu et al. (1996). Data show the temperature profiles in a 2-m bed of the Chinese S101 catalyst once a stationary cycling state is attained. One set of curves shows the temperature distribution just after switching direction and the second shows the distribution after a further 60 min. Simulated and experimental profiles are close. The surprising result is that the experimental maximum temperatures equal or exceed the simu-... [Pg.239]

At this point it might be useful to pull together some of the concepts that you have waded through in the last several chapters. We now know how to look at and think about dynamics in three languages time (English), Laplace (Russian) and frequency (Chinese). For example, a third-order, underdamped system would have the time-domain step responses sketched in Fig. 14.10 for two different values of the real TOOt. In the Laplace domain, the system is represented by a transfer function or by plotting the poles of the transfer function (the roots of the system s characteristic equation) in the s plane, as shown in Fig. 14.10. In the frequency domain, the system could be represented by a Bode plot of... [Pg.530]

Summing up the dynamical argument, telescopes reveal the architecture and motions of the cosmos on every scale. Planets, stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies are nested one within the other like Chinese boxes. But then the need for dark matter suddenly arises. Without it, stars at the edge of our Galaxy would fly off and the swarms of galaxies in clusters would scatter like birds. [Pg.199]

The Chinese market may be highly attractive, but it also differs greatly from that in Europe or North America. It is extremely dynamic, and the speed of change combined with a high degree of uncertainty means that companies appear and vanish at rates unknown in the West. This makes industry and market data hard to obtain - and the validity of available data questionable. [Pg.427]

Tianquan Lian received his BS degree from Xiamen University in 1985, his MS degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1988 and his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993. After postdoctoral training in the University of California at Berkeley, he joined the faculty of chemistry department at Emory University in 1996. He was promoted to associate professor in 2002 and full professor in 2005. He has been a recipient of the NSF CAREER award and the Sloan fellowship. His research interest is focused on the ultrafast dynamics of nanomaterials and interfaces. He is particularly interested in fundamental physical chemistry problems related to nanomaterials-based solar energy conversion concepts and devices. These problems include the dynamics of electron transfer, energy transfer, vibrational energy relaxation and solvation at interfaces and in nanomaterials. [Pg.775]

Tablets have been the most common matrix for the SFE of active components. Pure supercritical CO2 has been used in the extraction of megestrol acetate (145), caffeine and vanillin (146), and ibuprofen (147). In the first case, a comparison between two SFE systems was done and various support materials were assessed for their suitability as adsorbents. Methanol was used as the modifier for the extraction of benzodiazepines from tablets or capsules (148) in a static and dynamic mode for 5 and 10 min, respectively, at 65°C and 101 bar. The eluate was analyzed using GC-MS. Psoralen and isopsoralen have been extracted from Baishi pills and Baidianfeng capsules-belonging, to traditional Chinese medicines—using supercritical CO2 modified with tricloromethane (149). The determination of the analytes was performed by GC. By the standard additions method, recoveries were 97.8 101.2% with RSDs (three replicates) less than 2.01%. In the same way, SFE has been applied to the isolation of pentosalen (also known as imperatorin) from Cnidium monnieri cusson powder (a traditional Chinese medicine) (150). Computational chemistry was becoming in my mind more and more simply a part of computational sciences, with blurred boundaries of no essential value. Indeed, we prepared an extended animated movie The unity of Science linking quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics and fluid dynamics computer simulations with parallelism the audio comments were given in English, French, German, Italian and Chinese. This was the spirit also behind the volumes Modem Techniques in Computational Chemistry, MOTECC [100], and Methods and Techniques in Computational Chemistry, METECC... [Pg.108]

As a consequence of the toxicity related to the presence of aristolochic acid in plant preparations, several health institutions, such as the US Food and Drug Administration, Therapeutic Goods Administration have recently published safety information to prevent further cases of intoxication (information available at web address http //www.cfsan.fda. gov/ dms/ds-bot.html) [471], So detecting aristolochic acids in plant species that could be used in herbal remedies, and also in herbal preparations of uncertain composition, has attracted great priority in recent years to help prevent future adverse reactions. Aristolochic acids present in medicinal plants or herbs are analyzed by soxhlet extraction followed by TLC in the Chinese pharmacopoeia [412]. Another report used multiple ultrasonic extraction followed by HPLC analysis [472]. Ong s laboratory reported a method using a home made pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) system in dynamic mode to extract aristolochic acid in medicinal plants, followed by gradient elution HPLC [473]. Several scientific communities described various analytical methods for... [Pg.993]

Thus, this chapter (and the rest of Part III) deals with the dynamics of the implementation of the policy of rapprochement - a set of processes quite distinct from the internal policy debates and advocacy discussed in the previous sections. The direct interaction and negotiation between the Americans and the Chinese involved the mutual construction of identities and interests. In what was a relatively closed process, the importance of discursive constructions in the evolution of policy stances may be more clearly discerned. [Pg.154]
